How much for a new bathroom?

I have just had a quote and am a bit shellshocked!! The labour alone was really expensive. Can I just ask other Mumsnetters what they would think was a reasonable price to pay for a complete new bathroom, bath, sink, loo, underfloor heating, retiling walls and ceiling (loo needs all new pipework which as there is not one in the bathroom at the mo). I think I am out of touch with the cost of skilled workers such as plumbers.

We had ours done recently and I think all in all it came to about £4,000.

That was for a B&Q suite, fitting and tiling.

islandgirl · 16/08/2004 16:01

I think 4k is about right - can go up if you choose really expensive tiles, or taps, etc, but it is not cheap. Wish we could do our current one as it is avocado green, with no shower!!!!!!

Hayls · 16/08/2004 16:02

We've just done ours and got somebody in to plumb the suite in and lay the vinyl but dh did tiling etc himself and it cost about £1200. It was £350 to plumb suite and fit new shower, £80 to fit new radiator and £30 for laying vinyl.

We had ours done last year - brought the suite ourselves for approx £800 and then paid a guy to fit it, provide and lay laminate floor, retile two whole walls, two half walls and fit cabinets, mirrors etc. He charged £2,000 for the labour and it took him about 6 days.

KateandtheGirls · 16/08/2004 16:12

So how do these numbers compare Oxocube? I would think it would be several thousand, especially as you're including underfloor heating.

oxocube · 16/08/2004 16:12

Oh dear . Looks like my estimate is not too expensive after all. The labour came to about Eu6,000, but that included labour in other parts of the house so its a little hard to break down. These people must make a fortune!

Plumber is coming to fit our new suite next week, charging £250 (bath, sink, loo, electric shower). No new plumbing needed though, and everything going into the same places.

DH will sort floor and wall tiles (hahaha, believe that one when I see it!)

oxocube · 16/08/2004 16:18

We are looking at about 10,000 Euro altogether, but this is for new bathroom as described, taking out an existing toilet and basin in a separate loo, putting up a new partition wall, plastering said wall and opening up a doorway that had been blocked in. It also includes the cost of and fitting a new staircase and banisters to our attic floor and removing an old metal one. The price doesn't include the cost of the tiles though which are Eu28 per m2. I think Eu10,000 is about £7,000 or thereabouts. The bathroom fittings we have been quoted are mid price with good quality taps etc and hot water powered underfloor heating.

Sorry, can anyone answer this stupid question - need to change rad for new heated towel rail-type thingy to go into the wall rather than the current rad where the pipes go down into the floor.
Do we get this fitted first then tile around the pipes or tiling first then new rad on wall?

sandyballs · 16/08/2004 16:30

That's a lot of work Oxocube - doesn't sound too bad to me. They do charge a lot these days - like you say, must be earning a fortune!

tallulah · 16/08/2004 18:41

Bathrooms are a taboo subject in our house! Having had quotes from £2000 to £6000 for fitting 2 very small bathrooms in our house, DH decided he would do it himself. The equipment alone cost £2000+ (2 toilets, basins & baths plus 1 shower & shower screen & 1 wall cabinet) then on top of that have been all the extras- taps, carpet/vinyl, tiles, lighting, paint, pipes & extra tools. We are well into our next £1000.

He has been doing it for 4 weeks & so far I have a toilet & a bath & some lights. Still got tiling etc to go. Everything takes 5 times longer than he expected & our bedroom is full of equipment. NEVER AGAIN!!!! (& he hasn't even started the MAIN bathroom..... )

jodee, we've come to the conclusion that you tile first & then fit.

jodee · 16/08/2004 18:54

Thank you, Tallulah - oh dear, after reading that I think I am rapidly going off the idea of DH fitting the tiles, etc. our house is a mess as it is without DIY gubbins cluttering up the place for months.

Ameriscot2004 · 16/08/2004 19:07

We did a straight swap of sanitary ware and a new towel radiator for £1500 (labour + equipment). Tiling was £150 plus the cost of the tiles.

The actual cost of sanitary ware can be really cheap (around £250), which is why it never seems to faze them to do a new bathroom on House Doctor/Selling Houses.

The biggest challenge is in finding a plumber.

We are looking at doing ours. That would be replacing everything with a cheap white suite, re-tiling, and a new floor. Including labour we reckon about £3500.

jampot · 16/08/2004 20:37

an average tradesman charges about £120-£150 per day which is still only between £30-36k per annum taking out 4 weeks hols a year. he has to pay insurance, tools, advertising, general expenses and his own tax & NI etc so pretty normal salary I would say. My sis has a high class bathroom showroom selling jacuzzi etc but we bought ours from a local bathroom dealer for an absolute bargain. If you're from West Midlands Oxo I can fully recommend it

stripey · 16/08/2004 20:45

We did ours about 2 years ago had all the plumbing changed and a new shower, bath and basin fitted, all walls replastered and tiles all over, extractor fan, towel rail (not incl toilet as it is separate) and it cost about £7000. The main thing for us was that they completed the whole job while we were away - 2 weeks so when we got back everything was finished and its all guaranteed.

oxocube · 17/08/2004 07:20

Jampot, thanks for the recommendation but we're in Holland, so not so convenient for the Midlands

OMG! Is that how much they charge! I am still waiting for my quotes........

tallulah · 17/08/2004 16:50

DH reminded me after I'd posted that the highest quote was for supply & fitting just one of the rooms & was nearer £10K (£80 pm for 10 years!!!!!)

(Still no basin but we have 1/2 a row of tiles....)
