we need a new oven, our current gas one is crap. can i just order a new electric one from john lewis & assume fitting it in place of the gas one will be ok? how can i find an oven fitter........? the gas will need to be dealt with won't it. oh god.

very easy
you'll need someone Corgi registered to disconnect the gas, look in local guides for them, most cooker fitters will be able to do both jobs, maybe local paper ads?

Do you have single fule gas at the moment? Or dual fuel?

Do you have a power socket nearby - to provide electric? You have to be a bit careful as most cookers are not 13amp...but some are (our hoppoint is so we could plug it in anywhere). If it is not 13amp I think it may need its own circuit which may (i don't know much about wiring) be a bit trickier.

thanks very much both of you. at the moment we have a gas hob too (which we're keeping)which is also plugged into an electrical socket (for the ignition firing thingy). not sure what dual fuel is sms.

i quite like the look of this one, which says it needs a 20amp fuse. hmmm. will search the yellow pages i think.

Sounds straightforward then. Check your main fuse box/ set of trip switches. You should have one which says cooker. It should tell you if it is 13Amp or 20Amp. If it is only 13Amp I am reasonably sure it will simply be a case of changing that fuse/trip switch for a 20Amp one.

Might not be so simple as changing the fuse in the fuse box - the actual wiring will also need to be able to take 20 amps otherwise the fuse box will let too much power through the circuit which will blow the circuit. Or not enough power will get to yuor oven. If you have a seperate circuit for any major applicane that needs lots of power that circuit will be OK though - so you could use your power shower or electric immersion circuit if you have them (but only one thing can go through the circuit IYSWIM).

HC, my dad is corgi registered, I am sure he won't mind popping over to have a look and disconnect the gas for you. (Of course I will ask him before I say for sure though!)

oh kid, that makes me so happy! thanks very much. we still at the discussing it stage so it probably won't be for a while..... (how was bowling?).
