Idiot proof fake tan advice

Bibiboo · 13/08/2004 20:36

Can anyone recommend idiot proof fake tan I could put on my legs for a wedding in 2 weeks time? I'm 7 months pg and want my legs and arms to look good at least, even if the rest of me doesn't!

By the way, I am notoriously bad at applying fake tan and even got St Tropez wrong - that's meant to be fool proof isn't it?

TIA

why dont you go to a salon and get them to do it-think its usually about £30

nutcracker · 13/08/2004 20:45

I would definatly go to a salon.
I put fake tan on the other week for a night out.
The colour hadn't fully developed by the time i went out, but when i came home OMG, i had bright orange streaky legs.
Thankfully it would have been too dark in the club for anyone to have noticed (i hope).

I am never doing it myself again.

an example of fake tan going bad

here

Tinted ones are good for diy, because you can see where it's gone. L'Oreal sublime bronze tinted gel is pretty good imo. Costs about a tenner.

im appalling at applying fake tan, have forgotten how many times my legs have looked as if i have been rolling in dirt, i have spend shedloads on st tropez and other expensive tanning products, but two weeks ago i tried those tantowels ( about #1.25 in tesco) and they are the best i have ever used for not streaking! hurrah, chubby, white milk bottle legs are no more!! i can highly recommend them!!

Sozie · 13/08/2004 20:52

I went to a salon to have this done 2 weeks ago - it cost £35.00 for the St. Tropez treatment. I had the manually applied one (as opposed to air brushing/spray method) and it looked great and natural according to dh - nobody asked if it was fake even by best friend . I am usually quite fair and don't tan deeply but I would highly recommend this treatment.

diy tips
1 exfoliate first
2 moisurise
3 make sure moisuriser is dry
4 apply tan on small sections of bod at a time eg- lower legs then upper legs etc
5 when rubbing in rub round as well as up and down to avoid streaks
6 on 'high risk areas!' knees feet elbows inside of arms take some tan off with dry cotton wool and blend again without anymore tan being put on(looks more natural)
7 keep a mental map in your head making sure youve covered everywhere!
8 if in doubt moisurise again giving everywhere 'a good rub'!
9 dont forget to keep washing it off your hands as you do it

avon light tan is fairly easy to apply and you can buy a remover for santropez(but it costs enough already)

I am the queen of fake tan. St tropez just takes a few goes, especially when pregnant. i have been converted to st tropez spray tan although i ahve also used fake bake which you can get from salonlines.co.uk. You do need to make sure you hvae exfliated.

If it is for a one of occassion could you not get it done in a salon, is a good oppurtunity to watch how a pro does it!

nikkim · 14/08/2004 01:10

I also found that the spray on st tropez doesn't come off on your bed clothes as much as the manual one. Which has gone down well with dp! Hated waking up in brown sheets

nikkim · 14/08/2004 01:14

told you I was the fake tan queen I can't stop posting messages now.

The other week I was taken into hosital after seriously burning myself when the shower conked out. While writing in agony on the bed I worked out that the hospital nighties would make an excellent loose garment to wear while waiting for fake tan to dry. So I managed to nick mine when I was checked out. DP couldn't belive that even though i had been rushed into hospital in agony my mind was still on my tan!

My dp is an angel though, tuesday night is st tropez night, i stand starkers in the front room while he tans me!

Boots own moose is really really good. Make sure you moisturise a good few hours before hand (not directly before otherwise it won't soak in properly) and use a golf ball size bit around shin (circular movements) and back of leg and then just sweep down with the excess to the heel and around the foot. Then do top of leg working way up and just wipe hands over the knees. If you think you've applied it too heavily to any of the problem areas just lightly dab with a slightly wet cloth. I've never had streaks with this and only once had slightly overdone knee but was able to rub it off with a flannel and a hard bit of scrubbing! Best i've found and i've tried loads.

zippy539 · 15/08/2004 21:21

I'm really rubbish at fake tan but for special occasions I now use Rimmel sun shimmer - it's an instant tan so if you mess it up you can just shower it off and go again. It's also really good for patching things up if you mess up a proper fake tan. Mind you, I also use Flash Spray with Bleach for getting excess tan off my knees, palms etc... so who am I to comment (the flash spray works btw...)

Kayleigh · 16/08/2004 22:28

I second lou33. The L'Oreal sublime bronze is probably the best I've used. it has a lovely shimmer too. On another thread someone was recommending the M&S self tanning mitt. I bought the Boots Soltan one and it is brilliant. Like a very thin oven glove made of foam and you apply the self tan with it. The self tan goes on much more evenly and the mitt also stops your hands going orange.

lou33 · 16/08/2004 22:29

How much is the mitt Kayleigh?

Kayleigh · 16/08/2004 22:33

can't remember exactly lou33- but not a lot - somewhere around 3 to 4 pounds. It is quite flimsy and you have to wash it out after each use - from my 3 uses it would appear that after 5 or 6 uses you'd probably need another one.

Kayleigh · 16/08/2004 22:36

I was very close it costs £3.49

blossomhill · 16/08/2004 22:37

I would seriously recommend the body shop tanning mousse and mitt. It is the best I have ever used and I have tried loads. I went for the light-medium and was very pleased with how natural it was. No streaks at all!

lou33 · 16/08/2004 22:40

Cheers m'dear.

Kayleigh · 16/08/2004 22:40

and the m&s mitt is £3.50 . So not much in it !!

lou33 · 16/08/2004 22:59

I would always recommend a professional spray tan - and not a machine. With a technician spraying you, they can ensure even and complete coverage. I have used this mobile spray tanning company that covers Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire and have found the results excellant. They made me put barrier cream on various dry skin areas like nails, palms and soles. There is a before and after photo on the site on the gallery and FAQs.

If you are local give them a try, if not, find a pro that you can trust!

Good luck
