If you make a request and you use the word "bitte", it means "please" (i.e. can you help me please?).
If you hand someone something like a cup of tea, you say "bitte" meaning "here you are".
If someone thanks you, the response is "bitte" or some variant of it like "bitte sehr" meaning "you're welcome"

bitte when you think about is a mighty fine word. I was just thinking (although cutekid could do without it I think
) that if you in a shop or somewhere, people will ask "bitte?" meaning "yes?" or "can I help you" just inviting you to speak IYSWIM.

emkana - it was many years ago - I was 15 and on a youth exchange link (Oxford and Bonn were twin towns - I presume that they still are?)

Bonn was the capital in those days
