cutekids · 23/05/2007 19:25

OP posts:
cutekids · 23/05/2007 19:26

Also, how do you WRITE 16 in German....sorry to pick your brains!

OP posts:
Scootergrrrl · 23/05/2007 19:27

Bitte is please and I think 16 is sechszehn (six ten literally...)

iota · 23/05/2007 19:27

bitte = please

emkana · 23/05/2007 19:28

sechzehn (no s)

Desiderata · 23/05/2007 19:28

Sechsehn

Desiderata · 23/05/2007 19:29

Sorry, emk. You're right.

SSSandy2 · 23/05/2007 19:31

If you make a request and you use the word "bitte", it means "please" (i.e. can you help me please?).
If you hand someone something like a cup of tea, you say "bitte" meaning "here you are".
If someone thanks you, the response is "bitte" or some variant of it like "bitte sehr" meaning "you're welcome"

cutekids · 23/05/2007 19:32

thankyou so..ooo much everyone. been googling and couldn't find either answer believe it or not!

OP posts:
LIZS · 23/05/2007 19:33

can't bitte also be a sort of "excuse me".

SSSandy2 · 23/05/2007 19:35

bitte when you think about is a mighty fine word. I was just thinking (although cutekid could do without it I think
) that if you in a shop or somewhere, people will ask "bitte?" meaning "yes?" or "can I help you" just inviting you to speak IYSWIM.

iota · 23/05/2007 19:36

CK here's a handy site for you
babelfish.altavista.com/tr

Scootergrrrl · 23/05/2007 19:37

I know that schmetterling is butterfly and enterkuchen is duckling... does that help??

iota · 23/05/2007 19:37

although I was scraping up my memories of O level German, not using Babelfish

iota · 23/05/2007 19:38

zwiebeln is onions

found that out in a restaurant in Bonn

SSSandy2 · 23/05/2007 19:40

Don't fancy your chances of being served an Enterkuchen but it sounds nice

emkana · 23/05/2007 19:42

Bonn! That's my home town... (feeling wistful)
What did you do there, iota?

(Enterkuchen? )

Scootergrrrl · 23/05/2007 19:59

Oh dear, DH (who allegedly has degree in German) has been teaching DD and I've obviously heard wrong Please tell me what it really is so I can correct him and sound clever.

emkana · 23/05/2007 20:03

Entchen

Scootergrrrl · 23/05/2007 20:04

That'll throw him out when he gets back... me speaking better German than him

iota · 23/05/2007 20:04

emkana - it was many years ago - I was 15 and on a youth exchange link (Oxford and Bonn were twin towns - I presume that they still are?)

Bonn was the capital in those days

emkana · 23/05/2007 20:07

Yes still twinned.

Did you have a good time?
