Ok, talk to me about Bratz......

I hate them. DD is 5 and has never seen it/heard of it/wanted it etc. I loathe the idea of them - just the name alone makes me shudder!

DD has just started a new school and has just told me that she feels left out because everyone talks about Bratz and she has never even seen it.

Are they as awful as I'm imagining them to be? (Having seen all the 'merchandise' that comes with them I'm guessing yes!) or am I just getting old and should let her see it if she wants?

I think they are just dolls dressed up to look like those spoilt "bratz" from LA where they plaster make up all over their faces from age 8 and wear clothes very similar to a hooker.

i have no idea of what the tv show is like as i have just seen the dolls.

the only good thingi can find is that thay aren't barbie

moondog · 19/05/2007 11:24

Nasty crap.
My dd (6) has none nor has she ever seen any advertising for them (we don't watch tv)and it will stay that way. Laughed at???
Hmmm.not a concern of mine. We are too busy doing more interesting stuff frankly.

pointydog · 19/05/2007 11:32

Let her see them. Hardly going to traumatise her for life. Talk don't ban.

Her social life's got far more chance of suffering here than her lifelong image of women.

Blondilocks · 19/05/2007 11:32

I'm not bothered by Bratz. My 8 yr old DD has a couple - she likes the 'lil Bratz - she seems to prefer the small sized dolls for some reason. I think they are quite funky, although would NOT allow my daughter to copy some of their fashions! But then if I had a son I wouldn't let him go around with a gun or any other action man style weapons!

OK they are more tarty than Barbie - although Barbie can be pretty tarty, but most Barbies look identical, at least these have more varieties of hair & skin colour, & they don't really look like real people at all. IMO Barbie just says all people are skinny & blonde! DD does have both though.

The best thing is that you don't have to have millions of shoes that fall off - have not yet lost one Bratz foot.

zephyrcat · 19/05/2007 11:38

So far she has no interest in Barbie yet either thank god!!

I haven't said to her she can't watch it, she's never asked before. I'm just wondering whether to forget she sad it and let it pass or find it for her to watch so she can join in with her friends.

Personally I'd rather she didn't if I'm honest but her social life is more important if it's causing her to worry.

allieBongo · 19/05/2007 12:41

vile creations. i much prefer strawberry shortcake

juicyjoe · 19/05/2007 12:44

My dd1 is 5 and is obsessed wit Bratz. But in all fairness she doesn't want to dress like them or plaster herself in make up. Granted she tries to speak with an american accent which i find highly amusing! She is going thru an stage and i'm sure will b e fascinated with something else in a few months.

SoupDragon · 19/05/2007 12:45

I think Barbie is worse.

contentiouscat · 19/05/2007 12:53

FGS I know how some get upset about them but they are dolls made of plastic, I bought one for a friends daugher and I am her favourite person ever because if it

Im sure the movies are foul but I suggest putting your headphones on and letting her get on with it...all kids want to be one of the gang at that age!! Give it a year and they will have moved on to something else anyway.

I had a barbie with toothpick legs and Jordan breasts when I was a child - it really hasnt scarred me for life!!

DevilsAdvocado · 19/05/2007 13:08

Hm, sometimes I think they are vile looking. Other times I struggle to be bothered tbh.

And then other times I think that parents who ban this stuff are being far too controlling. They are dolls fgs.

So I sit on the fence.

DD watches Barnyard and Happyfeet etc.. if she was given a bratz dvd I would probably let her watch it also

BellaLasagne · 19/05/2007 13:27

My DD is 8 and loves them. I hate them because of what they look like and their 'outlook' on life i.e. shopping, partying, looking like sluts etc They're way down at the bottom of the female role-model list don't you think?

DD and I have come to a deal after multiple arguments. I won't buy her anything to do with them but I won't stop her from playing with them with her friends or having contact with them. FGS, life's too short.

This phase will probably fizzle out just to be replaced by something equally or more worrying so I think this is a reasonable stand to take.

hellish · 19/05/2007 13:37

I have lost a Bratz foot but it just made our doll community more diverse.

hayes · 19/05/2007 13:44

agree life is too short to be bothered by a doll that your dd will grow out of quickly.

I also agree that things have changed, when I was little I played with baby dolls (namely Tiny Tears) and didn't own a Barbie/Sindy till I was 9...I subsequently played with them till I was 12/13. Times have changed, but I feel that as long as my dd has other traditional toys (dressing up, skipping, jigsaws etc) she has the choice what she wants to play with. More often than not it a mixture of everything together and not solely Bratz/Barbies/Princesses.

yes these toys are not ideal, but as parents we are the educators of our children and its up to us that they don't believe the hype

wheresthehamster · 19/05/2007 14:52

To dd3 they are just more children for her 'classroom'. They sit on the floor in front of the easel along with beanie babies, baby Annabel and playmobil people and get told off like the rest of them.

hayes · 19/05/2007 14:57

so you have one of those too?

donnie · 19/05/2007 14:58

stick to your guns!

bratz are child whores.

donnie · 19/05/2007 15:01

there was a bratz thread a few days ago and I think it was UnquietDad who called them the crack child whores of doll-land, or something similar!

and I agree.

Nightynight · 19/05/2007 15:26

bratz are a no no in our house, and dd1 knows that I think they are tarts. Fortunately, she doesn't seem to find them attractive.
