So you believe in god but are you religious?

One word answer too please.

Twiglett · 15/05/2007 14:46

pmsl ... you have to be really really FIRM to get MNers to use only 1 word .. fannying about with pleasant requests gets you nowhere

they like the sound of their own typing you see

Astrophe · 15/05/2007 14:46

I can honestly say I don't describe anyone as 'religious', but am quite sure people would say it about me! I don't find it offensive, just ambiguous.

UnquietDad · 15/05/2007 14:46

donnie

here

purpleturtle · 15/05/2007 14:47

Thanks, unquietdad, just about to do that.

Donnie - don't you use active convos?

donnie · 15/05/2007 14:48

thanks!

donnie · 15/05/2007 14:49

I do but just didn't see ti for some reason!

Monkeytrousers · 15/05/2007 17:46

Oh, I was being flippant - remember the mumsnet amazon boycott re the 'spare the rod, spoil the child' book - it is scripture to some people, but I wasn't - oh, I give up

OP posts:
Carmenere · 15/05/2007 17:49

I was baptised Catholic but have little respect for the religion. I believe in God and have a personal relationship with him/her/it. I don't practice any religion.

Lemmiwinks · 15/05/2007 17:54

QUOTE - "do you follow a scripture or tenet written by someone else, be it god or prophet - that tells you what to wear, what you can and can't eat, who to sleep with, when to sleep with them, to beat your kids, stop them watching telly, etc?"

Wtf?! Seriously, you clearly have no understanding of religion of any sort if that's what you think it's all about. I fail to see the point of doing a survey on God to then accuse people of being a mentalist just b/c they do believe in God. There are crazy people in the world, their religion is not what makes a person crazy - they'd be crazy no matter what they believed in. So you don't believe in God and clearly have issues with whatever religion you grew up with - that's your problem. Why hold those issues that you have against other people? Do you know how many religions there are in the world with varying religious beliefs and ideals? I certainly don't know of any religions that actually promotes beating your children, correct me if I'm wrong. That's insane to generalise about what a religious person or believer in God, on whatever level, feels, thinks or believes in. Wow.. What a shocking degree of ignorance on your part in my opinion...

Monkeytrousers · 15/05/2007 18:09

Think what about it? Is it just the subtle joke (something that is obviously not possible on MN these days anymore) about beating your kids or the rest of it that you object to? You may not like it, but there was a book by people claiming to be Christians that did advocate besting your children. Mumsnetters boycotted Amazon until they removed it ? though I?m not sure if they did. It was reference to that. I have not accused ?people of being a mentalist just b/c they do believe in God?; if you disagree, post the words in their entirety. As for the rest of your post, well you are arguing with some straw man you?ve constructed in the above claim, so are arguing with yourself essentially.

I clearly have issues? Please, post my words again where I state this unequivocally. What?s my problem? I have no problem. Except the fact that MN is becoming an exceptionally reactionary place at the moment where having any slightly mischievous yet measured debate is impossible.

Please, tell me what ?issues? I have with other people, and how you deduce them?

Have you never heard of ?spare the rod, spoil the child? that is a Christian proverb, I didn?t make it up.

I?m afraid the ignorance comes from you, with the amount of bile to spill from you so quickly and readily.

We really can?t have a debate on here about religion these days can we? I?m pretty sick of the reactionary nature of MN at the mo. It used to be a site where you could come, ask challenging questions and get considered answers. Now all we get are emotional rants.

no

3sEnough · 15/05/2007 18:37

Not religious, but YES christian - sorry - very big difference.

potoftea · 15/05/2007 18:40

yes, I am religious, pray every day, mass on sundays, teach children about God, and hope they see him as a friend.

Not as blindly following Catholic Church as my parents generation though, too many awful things have been uncovered, so while I still respect the Church, I am aware of its failings.

would like my 3 dc to have less Catholic guilt than me though, I do feel it holds me back!

Lemmiwinks · 15/05/2007 18:44

True, my response was an emotional one but your original comment was meant to get a reaction, was it not? And yes, I probably did make a generalisation of your belief system but you did the same with the belief system of religious individuals and how they live their life. I think it's safe to assume that when you generalise religious people into those categories you mentioned (whether you meant it as a "sublte joke" or not) you will get people assuming you either have issues with religion in general or believe all religious people live their life a certain way. Or both. Apologies if I'm wrong. I'm not saying you need to think religion is great or feel a need to have God or religion in your life, there's nothing at all wrong with that but it's not right to just lump all religions and all religious people into one category and I hope you can understand that.

I'm not even going to go into the Christian belief of spare the rod, spoil the child but I will say that it's mad to take that as a pro-beating-your-child set of beliefs on the part of all Christians. I'm sure you know that. Hence the reason I think you made your comment - to get people worked up and get an emotional response. At any rate I think if you were truly after a religious debate, why then get upset when I respond like that? Why ask for a one word answer of "yes or no" to your questions if you really wanted to enter into a discussion or have a debate? Just curious..

lulumama · 15/05/2007 18:44

my following of my tenet / scripture is thus:

do unto others as you would have done unto yourself

i am Jewish, and not practising , i am spiritual and believe in karma

one of the stories i learnt at the jewish school i attended as primary & junior was someone, who was a doubter and not a follower of the torah, was to ask a rabbi, i think rabbi akivah, to say the whole torah standing on one leg...

so he said the do unto others phrase...

i think that is a really good way to live, regardless of what religion you do or don;t follow...you can have good morals and ethics indpendently of being religious or observant

beckybrastraps · 15/05/2007 18:48

Yes

beckybrastraps · 15/05/2007 18:55

Oh. Now I have read the thread. Monkeytrousers - by your definition I am clearly not religious. My apologies.

And UQD, re. ancient religions. Yes. Why?

Monkeytrousers · 15/05/2007 19:14

The reaction I had in mind was a wry smile of remembrance or just a wry smile even.

OP posts:
UnquietDad · 15/05/2007 19:28

3senough - could you elaborate on the difference please? (Genuine question.)

becky bs- I just wondered why they are "religious" but why that's not an adequate description of people who practise Christianity. So I suppose that is same question.

Oh don't worry, you got a wry smile out of me as well, just probably not for the reason you anticipated. No hard feelings, it was just a response you know, albeit an emotional one that you were not quite after.

MaryBS · 15/05/2007 19:46

Yes

(I'm training to be a lay minister, so I guess that makes me a yes!)

beckybrastraps · 15/05/2007 19:54

Ah UQD, now I said 'yes' to the religious question for myself, so I'm not the best person to answer that. You follow a religion, you're religious.

And MT - a wry smile? Maybe you didn't express yourself awfully well. I'm pretty laid back about religion, and I found it a bit off.

Anyway, ignoring that, why are you interested?

Furrymummy · 15/05/2007 20:03

I go to church regularly, I get involved with church activities and I try (and often fail) to live a good Christian life, i.e being nice to people! Would that be classed as religious? I don't go around bible bashing and trying to convert people because I think peoples' beliefs are deeply personal and should be respected even if you don't agree with them.

Monkeytrousers · 15/05/2007 21:41

I've forgotten why now BBS, and can't be arsed to remember. I've had one of those days...show me the way to the nearest bar!
