soft drinks pop up

Just a quickie here, but do the rest of you keep getting the soft drinks pop up every couple of minutes when you are signed onto this site? I am finding it very annoying, especially as I don't buy any of the drinks they are surveying!!

Its those 28 week pregnancy hormones Tetley

I access mumsnet through a bookmark that goes straight to Active Conversations and agree with other posters - I've never seen this pop up! Have as many as you like!

oxocube · 15/07/2002 15:39

Justiner, does it make a difference to Mumsnet revenue if we fill in the pop up or simply close it? I have just closed it up til now, but if it brings in more money, I will answer the questions, even tho I don't buy any of the products mentioned. Maybe they could do a survey of alcoholic drinks I am more than happy to volunteer myself as a tester, especially for G&Ts

Oxocube,
Actually doesn't make a difference in terms of what we get paid if you fill it in - guess they would be unlikely to come back, though, if no-one filled it in.

XAusted · 15/07/2002 20:29

I find it only pops up twice: once with the mumsnet homepage and once when I chose talk from the menu. It's not much trouble to click and get rid of it. Not much effort in return for the revenue I don't think. And what do we really disapprove of ... the pop up or the products it concerns?

susanmt · 15/07/2002 20:37

If you ignore it and then mumsnet comes on top of it then it stays there!!!

PamT · 15/07/2002 22:08

Sorry to be a nuisance here but nobody has answered my question on the Mumsnet books thread - what information are the drinks people getting from me if I do answer the questionnaire? Do they get my email address and info about my computer system? One of the reasons why I like mumsnet so much is that I don't get spam from it and I'm very reluctant to divulge my email address just in case the floodgates open.

eemie · 15/07/2002 22:19

Like PamT I go to great lengths to protect my privacy and filter out junk. One of the reasons I like Mumsnet is that you can access it without being bombarded with advertising or spam. I would be willing to pay a subscription to protect that. Maybe people who don't want the advertising and don't want to take part in market research could pay a higher subscription.

justiner · 16/07/2002 11:01

PamT,
Sorry to take a while to get back to you. I'm almost 100% sure that they only get what you fill in on the survey - certainly we've not agreed anything else - but Tech's away and I wanted to just double check with him that they haven't got any fancy software operating that can do anything else. I've left him a message and should be able to confirm today.
Justine

Thanks Justiner, I know that some unscrupulous companies do all sorts of things with the info they get just because you have entered their web site and some of them can retrieve a lot more information than we think from us. I'm probably being over cautious in this case but I would hate to be in a 'big brother is watchin you' situation.

sml · 16/07/2002 12:54

go to google.com and do a search on POPUP KILLER to find numerous links to popup killer programs that you can download free... some of them apparently have addresses that you can specify you are ready to accept popups from, so you can include mumsnet ones and get rid of all the rest if desired!

tech · 16/07/2002 14:00

Just to confirm Justine's note, we don't pass any data along to the pop-up people.

Top tech tip: the easiest way to stop pop-ups is to leave them open after they pop up. Just click the other window you were looking at to hide it and it will sit there ignored.

I understand it's going away tonight...
