Hi there, got to get DS a passport - one thing that occurs to me - how on earth do I get a passport photo of a baby - as he can't sit up by himself, is it okay for him to be on my lap on the photo???

go to a colorama or snappy snaps: they will take a digital shot of your baby while you hold him from underneath and process it for you on the spot

or take it while he's lying down on a white background?

Jessops have a white cushion that they can lie on, on the floor, and take the piccie

I did as sophable said - put 3 month old dd on a white background and tried to get her to keep her eyes open whilst I took it - I was also careful to make sure she was wearing her 'normal street attire' and took her glasses, wig & make-up off. LOL!

if you have a digital camera or can scan a photo you can send it to an online place. I used this one, really quick service, you get 10 for 99p (not including p&p)

You're spot on, you can't be in much of the photo. First attempt at dd1's passport photo was turned down because I was visible behind her.

Don't start me on the REST of the sodding passport form....just remember that the independent witness is witnessing you, not the baby. And don't put any tippex on it. And use the blackest of black ink and keep your signature within the box...

Lifted from the other passport thread going, check on the new guidelines for photographs.

Main things for new photos include:

  • Applicants must submit two identical photographs, which have been taken in the last six months.

  • The photos should be printed on normal photographic paper and should be 45 mm x 35 mm in size.

  • The photo should show a close up of the applicant?s head and shoulders so that their face covers 70-80% of the photograph.

  • It should be taken against a white, cream or light grey plain background so that the applicant?s features are clearly distinguishable against the background.

  • The photo must be of the applicant on their own, with no other people visible. It must show their full face, looking straight at the camera, with a neutral expression, with their mouth closed.

  • Photographs must be printed at 1200 dots per inch resolution or better if they are digital or scanned photos.

Are you in London by any chance, mummytosteven? If so I can recommend a place where both my kids got them done when they were weeks old (or less). They have a way for you to "seat" the baby on a bench, and you hold them in inconspicuous places, like at the nape of the neck. They have it all worked outthey're vertiable passport photo gurus and know the requirements for every country in the world, I reckon. I like those guys a lotand it would save you trouble if you can't be bothered to work out how to do iti yourself (as I can't).

There are 2 camera shops where I live, they both do them. Junior sits, held by you in front of a white background, you keep as low down as you can (photos are not permitted if you can see a hand supporting the head!) and with my dd they took 4 or 5 shots with a digital camera until one was ok, then printed them off. They would also do them lying on a white cushion for younger children

And in two months' time DS will look completely different, of course.

Grumble rant effing passport offices...

You just reminded me to update ds2's passport pic MI, last taken at 6 weeks old. Thanks!

Well we are off on holiday next week and DD is now 2y 4m. Her passport photo is of her at 2 DAYS old. She looks nothing like the photo at all. Ridiculous idea I think!

Linnet · 07/08/2004 00:55

We took dd2 to Jessops to get her passport photo done. She was 7 weeks old and they laid her on a big white cushion on the floor. The first photo they took was great she was awake and looking directly at the camera, although it's ok if they have their eyes shut apparently. But they said that the photo was too dark and they had to take another one. That one had a bit of the carpet showing at the top of the photo, so I'm fully expecting it to be sent back with a note saying they need another photo.

Seems mad that when she's nearly 5 she'll have a photo of her taken at 7 weeks old but if they have to have their own passport then they have to have it. I'd never really thought about it before until we went to Canada when dd1 was 4 and she was on my passport at the time. We could have had anybodys child with us as there was no photo and they kept looking for a photo when they checked the passport at the airports.
