We get these a lot around us - young offenders though. I have to admit I'm terrible - I refuse to entertain anyone trying to sell something on my doorstep and the same rule applies here. Although I am polite about it!

oliveoil · 09/05/2007 11:29

no prisoners come to my house

we got tons of double glazing, so I just point to the DOUBLE GLAZED windows in a sarcastic manner

munz · 09/05/2007 11:30

seriously? what are they selling? we don't get them here.

UCM · 09/05/2007 11:30

I don't but DH does every time. I have 3 ironing board covers that don't fit my ironing board

Whoooosh · 09/05/2007 11:30

I'm like you Harman but usually becasue they call in the Winter on the coldest/wettest day of the year and I feel sorry for them....

thelittleElf · 09/05/2007 11:31

Yes, I have bought car chamois thingies, gardening gloves (WTF I hate gardening) and tea towels. DH has also bought stuff - he is definitely softer touch than me! As you can tell from my list they call quite regularly. My understanding is that they are recently released young offenders. I have always found them to be very polite and tbh although I always feel a bit ripped afterwards I'd rather they did this than burgle my house .

Now double glazing salesman and energy suppliers I NEVER feel sorry for and they are sent packing immediately!

NoodleStroodle · 09/05/2007 11:54

I always buy stuff - pity more than need. You have to give them another chance and if everyone bought a duster..well perhaps the world would be a better place in so many ways!

Have no sympathy for gas salesman who are lying toads IMO.

CCBB - That same thought always crossed my mind, if i refuse will they be back! Plus always felt well at least they are putting in the effort. LOL at Whoosh and her stockpile! Mind you I have bought some real rubbish too

chocolatebirdy · 09/05/2007 11:58

Not a better place, just not as dusty!!

MrsShrek · 09/05/2007 11:58

Im not sure if you they are prisoners but keep gettin air freshner sales men at my door.

They want £1.50 for a car 1 and you get them same on in poundland 5 for £1!!!!!

They say its for charity but only about 5p or something does!!

DrNortherner · 09/05/2007 11:58

Can't escape from the image of a man on my doorstep in a stripy jumper with a swag bag selling dusters.

We have no prison near us so we do not get this.

Not sure how I'd feel tbh.

Does he get to spend his money on ilegall fags from the top dog back in the cell tonight?

MrsShrek · 09/05/2007 12:00

surely they are actually ex-prisoiners?

Quootiepie · 09/05/2007 12:00

I paid £8 for some candles (the 50p a pack tea light things) once, mug that I am!

I'm not entirely sure where they come from as we have no prison or young offenders unit anywhere near us. There is usually a group of them and they must be dropped off by someone else as public transport here is limited . Haven't seen any of them for a few months though so they may have decided we have reached duster saturation point!

LaDiDaDi · 09/05/2007 12:06

Oh I had one a while ago and I didn't realise that he was a prisoner. I didn't buy anything because I didn't need anything but if I'd known that he was a prisoner I think I would have been inclined to buy something. I know that might seem silly but I think it's important to be encouraging and positive if someone's trying to get their life back on track.

If he, or someone else, comes back then I will buy some pegs as mine are always snapping because I just leave them out on the line all of the time.
