I'm after advice. We currently have a large, double door size, gap in the wall between our kitchen and dining room that needs finishing off. The house is about 14 years old. We are going to make the gap slightly smaller but need advice on whether the top should be square, arched or square with the corners rounded. Any thoughts?

ok I realise it's not the most interesting thread in the world but i'm getting sleepless nights over this problem . Anybody any idea what is going into new houses / what is in vogue and what isn't?

Personally I'd do square: don't think arches go with newer buildings/N Eurpean house design, and i suspect that it will be cheaper to construct. One of the first 9and only) jobs we have done in our house since moving in is to get rid of the arch effect opening between the 'through lounge'.

But I am sure it's a matter of taste and opinion only!

As it is reasonably modern house I think squared off would look good.

I wouldn't go for curves or rounded bits - I thik a square edge is quite modern - we have a living room and dining room with the original wall knocked through and the arch between is awful!!

thank you everyone I was beginning to think I had BO

Bryants seem to have squared off doorways - I'd go look at some showhomes locally to see

OK, let's be different!

My parents knocked through an external wall from the living room into the new kitchen (20y ago) and made the gap a perfect semicircular arch. And it's very nice!

Square, definitely. I suspect that arches are a bit old fashioned and a modern, crisp square shape will add more value to your property - if that matters to you. New houses and trendy developments all do squares, not arches.

Square. And if possible I would extend the gap right up to the ceiling, and don't put architrave around it.

CountessDracula · 04/08/2004 15:27

Square. Hate arches.

I vote for square too - much more modern!
