Shopping in Calais

Does anyone have any tips about doing a shopping day trip to Calais? (Minus ds - hurrah!) We are thinking about going mainly to the hypermarkets/malls, but would love to know any small shops of interest. I've heard of Cite de Europ (sp?), what's it like?

I'm of the impression that most shops are closed Sundays, is that correct? Do you know the best market days? If anyone could point me in the direction of a suitable website, that would be great and is it possible to print off a UK/Fr supermarket price comparison list from somewhere? Thanks in advance!

Hi Jodee

Cite Europe is great - check out the childtren's clothes shops - I particularely like Sergent Major and I think they have "Tout compte fait" which is quite cheap and great for everyday children's clothes !
Yes forget Sundays !
Marina is the French expert though....

I found these links for you :
a map : www.day-tripper.net/maplocalmap.html
Cite Europe's website : www.cite-europe.com/prod/index.jsp?pays=2

Jodee, enjoy! I think Calais gets a poor press, there are some nice restaurants - we go to Ancienne Histoire on the Rue Royale, which does the most delicious grills. It is pretty central, friendly, popular with locals and moderately priced.
Almost everything shuts on Sunday and quite a lot of stuff is closed Mondays too.
There are other shops in the Rue Royale and its continuation into the other part of central Calais. It is one main drag so not hard to see what's on offer. There is a super cheese shop at the top end of Rue Royale, some nice chocolatiers, and a rather grim Monoprix at the bottom end. Like any French town, small stationers, fashion shops for adults and children, astonishing number of hairdressers. Personally, I would not say that any one shop in Calais itself was a "don't miss".
Regarding Cite d'Europe, it's a necessary evil I guess. Get there reasonably early (before lunchtime)and you should be able to park, it is a 10 minute drive from the ferry/hoverports and practically on top of the exit from the tunnel.
It has a lot of good clothes shops, especially for children and babies, an excellent big pharmacie/parfumerie, a Tescos (which we have never ventured into because it is always horribly crowded) selling wine, and Oddbins, where the staff are friendly and the prices still very competitive.
Best of all but also crowded is the Carrefour supermarket. If you want to buy food rather than lots of drink, it is not too bad, but the drink section is always hateful. There are deli counters selling fantastic fresh fish and seafood (take a coolbag), the fruit and veg is very good by French supermarket standards, and in the grocery sections it has the best range of organic foods I have ever seen in a French shop.
Top cheaper buys in France are olive oil, coffee, chocolate, pistachio nuts, mustard, seasonal veg & fruit (peppers, courgettes, melons and apricots right now), cheese, tinned fish like sardines, branded mineral water, etc etc. Quite a lot of the supermarket cheaper wine is pretty bad, but Carrefour's own label appellation controlee stuff (especially whites such as Muscadet sur Lie and Alsace varieties) is nice and excellent value. Fortant de France do good quality table wines and Carrefour sell some.
The restaurants at Cite d'Europe are all horrible! And there are no Bluewater-type toilet facilities.
We do the run 4-5 times a year and always enjoy it, but find it tiring. Definitely a wise move to leave ds at home. We bring ours back something from the children's boutique Du Pareil au Meme. Oh, and Carrefour sells Petit Bateau and Absorba children's undies for about 50% less than you pay for these good brands in the UK. So we get him pants too.
Have a great day! The last time we went, actually, we did an overnighter with ds and stayed in St Omer, just inland from Calais. That does have the most fantastic local veg market on Saturday mornings.

Can you get some clothes from Jacadi for me???

Seriously, I always found Calais and the cite ok, but do try and "do" both. Don't think my mastercard likes me going though...

Jodee
You will also have time to drive the 20 minutes it takes along the dual carriageway to Boulogne which is much prettier than Calais. When I take a Dover-Calais daytrip I always go to the Old Town area of Boulogne for lunch where I have never had trouble parking and we go to a different restaurant each time. Haven't had a duff lunch yet. Forget shopping on a Sunday, nothing is open.

Make sure you get yourself a chicken and avocado sarnie at Pret a manger at the eurotunnel port (this side)

slj · 10/07/2002 15:31

Thanks everyone, I knew I could rely on you! CAM, I'd quite like to see Boulogne again, not been since I was 11 when I won a trip on a hovercraft - it was fantastic. Angharad, I don't think my credit card is going to be too impressed with me either! Marina and Pupuce, many thanks for your detailed responses, you gave me some great advice last Summer when I went to SW France, unfortunately my only lasting memory is of ds (who had just taken his first faltering steps) falling face first into the dust every 5 minutes (and we drove back on Bastille Day, not a good idea either.)

Other items which are much cheaper in France are halogen light bulbs and batteries. Je ne sais pas pourquoi!

bettys · 10/07/2002 16:54

My favourite buy is those pudding mixes for tarte au citron and creme patissiere(Alsa?), and bottles of Vahine caramel. Great for knocking up quick puds!

Faith · 11/07/2002 10:12

Www.day-tripper.net has price comparisons, maps showing location of hypermarkets etc I think the Eurotunnel and ferrysavers websites also have similar info. If you want to avoid the hordes at the Calais hypermarkets, Auchan in Boulogne is quieter. We had an excellent meal at the Aquarium in Boulogne (you don't have to pay admission if you just want to go to the restaurant). It was not cheap, but dh had the most amazing mountain of fruit-de-mer! It specialises in fish!

CAM · 11/07/2002 14:00

Yes I have been to that Aquarium, I think its called Nausicaa if I remember correctly. dd enjoyed it, we didn't eat in the restaurant though, wonder where they get the fish from?!!!

Don't leave your car unattended at Carrefour Calais. They smash the glass and steal all your bags. Its a very common occurrence but they do nothing to prevent it. Guards need to be in the car park all day. British cars are highly targeted! Our back window was smashed and ALL our bags stolen in December 2019.
