And did you start off with those hours or full time and dropped down post-kids?

OP posts:
mattersnot · 06/05/2007 22:18

doctor 74/week (on average) homework on top. It's crap sometimes.
LaDiDaDi What do you specialise in?

Surfermum · 06/05/2007 22:25

In contrast to mattersnot, I only work 13 hours as an administrator for a drug and alcohol in-patient unit. I have absolutely no desire to return to what I was doing pre-dd (Business Manager in the NHS) and am really happy doing a few hours in a job with less responsibility.

1dilemma · 06/05/2007 22:28

Xenia I've bumped it for you it is a large family one but it's about returning to work early.

LaDiDaDi · 06/05/2007 22:47

I'd rather not say specifically mattersnot, need to keep some anonymity, but I work in a busy hospital specialty.

LaDiDaDi · 06/05/2007 22:47

What about you? What level are you at?

mattersnot · 06/05/2007 22:58

Yeah (I ment GP/hosp etc!) so you've said enough (!!) I'm the same, maybe we know each other that would be funny!
You've done well to get your hrs down, I really don't think mine changed much with all the banding! More people doing the work, so must be more work I suppose.

Linnet · 06/05/2007 23:03

I work for my local council in a job share I do 22 hours a week and my job share person does 15 hours a week.

I'm happy with my 22 hours, worked over 3 days a week plus 1 saturday every now and again. The money is good, I'll never be extremely rich but I always have the choice of going full time should my job sharer leave. At the moment working full time isn't for me, dd2 is still little and I like spending my two days off a week with her, plus it means that in the school holidays I have two days to spend with dd1 as well and we can go away to places and spend time together as a family. If I was full time I wouldn't see them that much, yes we'd have more money but I'd rather spend time with my girls.

berolina · 06/05/2007 23:07

My current job is very specialised and hence very identifiable. My 'career' is all over the place.
I do 3 1/2 days a week, some of it from home.

dmo · 06/05/2007 23:20

i'm a childminder and work 55hrs per week

its true some people are just not cut out to stay at home with their children and make much better parents leaving them with me and getting out of the house to work
i also look after children whos parents dont work

twinsetandpearls · 06/05/2007 23:23

U yeach secondary three days a week for which I put in about 45 - 50 hours in an avergae week although it can be less and can be more week and I am also a playworker for 6 hours.

I stopped work altogther to have dd and started the playwork again when dd was two and teaching just before dd started school. I am up for a promotion next week which may mean teaching full time.

northender · 06/05/2007 23:23

I'm a physio and I work 22 hours a week over 3 days. Was full time before ds was born and have no plans to increase my hours when they're both at school in 2 years time! I work Mon, Tues, Fri which works perfectly for me. dd only has 2 consecutive days at nursery.

Never feel I'm doing a great job at work though, part of my role is team leader stuff, hard when you have FT team members

chocolatekimmy · 06/05/2007 23:24

HR Manager - 2.5 days per week

Used to be full time (and more senior position )until after the children. Dropped to 4 days then 3 now 2.5.

I think its a perfect balance.

twinsetandpearls · 06/05/2007 23:27

I do feel guilty over the hours I work but we have the holidays togther whihc makes up for the fcat that I am almost an absentee mum during term time.

MrsDiorKeanuReeves · 06/05/2007 23:30

I'm a training administrator. I do 18 hours a week.

Nikki76 · 06/05/2007 23:31

I'm due to go back to work soon....work for a bank....in the head offices....its all gone pants in there apparently - not even allowed personal items on the desk fgs!

lyrabelacqua · 06/05/2007 23:35

Xenia talks so much crap!!!
I work part time and feel I've got just the right balance because i get to see my children grow up but i also get to keep my carer ticking over until they're in school full time and i can work more hours and get it back on track. I'm a journo btw.

lyrabelacqua · 06/05/2007 23:36

btw i do 16 hours a week.

Nikki76 · 06/05/2007 23:36

Xenia - what do you do btw?

Management accountant, 37.5 hours a week plus overtime as required.

Dottydot · 07/05/2007 14:42

I don't think Xenia talks crap at all! She talks about what she feels is right for her - which applies to some people but not everyone - same applies to anyone's thoughts?!

dotcom · 07/05/2007 14:47

I am an examination invigilator and I work when I want to!

moondog · 07/05/2007 14:47

I'm a salt back f/t after 3 years at home.I love what I do,bloody love it and work for a fantastic trust that bends over backwards to look after us (due in no small part to fact that salts very thin on the ground.)

We can have unpaid leave, annual hours, time off in holidays, whatever we want really.

Also have a business that is developing fast and am doing an MSc witha view to being a behaviour analyst.

I can see where you are coming from Xenia, and much as I hate to admit it,fell a million types happier since back at work.Howevere I agree with GDG in that working f/t is not in some way doing a favour to your kids, any more than being a sahm for years and years is doing a favour to them either.

RanToTheHills · 07/05/2007 14:48

mgmt position, fairly senior but p/t (how did I get that then, xenia? )
I think it's harder in many ways being p/t but i see it absolutely as a way of retaining my career, not losing it completely which giving up work would have meant for me.

DoorstoManual · 07/05/2007 14:52
