Oh my God. My ds (3 in 2 weeks) has just started the 'why' phase and it's driving me totally screwie. I had an ½ hour conversation with him yesterday but all he kept saying was 'why'?? How long does this last?

Forever (or that's what it feels like )

CookieMonster · 02/08/2004 14:11

woodpops ... my dd is 3 and 5 months and is still doing it continuously - doesn't it just drive you round the bend? I realise it's how they learn things but there are limits to how much of it a mother can take!

unicorn · 02/08/2004 14:12

don't know - but v interested.. my ds (2.6) is into the what's that? phase... and repeat it loads and loads... I think you just have to remember the mantra....

It's just a phase!
It's just a phase
It's just a phase!!!!!!

woodpops · 02/08/2004 14:13

Terrible 2's are a breeze compared to this 'why' stage!!!!!

My strategy is:

1 answer properly
or
2 say 'why do you think?'
or
3 ignore, if he really wants to know he'll keep asking.
or
4 go mad rip own hair out

Hulababy · 02/08/2004 14:14

My DD is 2y 3m and has started this too. What does xxx mean? What's that? Why is that mummy? Why why why??????

Argh! Driving me mad already and it looks like we have many more months of it ahead!

Bagpuss30 · 02/08/2004 14:14

Forever

Sorry, couldn't help that I'm afraid . DS is neary four and the whys have just started to get less, but only just. I only hope that I get a small break before his sister (23 months) starts.

woodpops · 02/08/2004 14:21

Dh tried turning the tables on ds at the weekend by asking him why all the time. But all ds reaction to dh was 'silly daddy'.

A LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time!!!!

My dd is 'going through a phase' of asking how everythoing is made.
The other night she said,"mammy how was i made?"

Birds and the bees at 3.5 surely not

marialuisa · 02/08/2004 14:31

Birds and bees is better than death Angeliz. DD is the same age as yours and she's freaking me out. DH is blaming the catholic church, i'm just being vague....

Tetley · 02/08/2004 14:33

'Why' definately lasts forever!! Ds1 has been asking it for at least the last 18 months (although we had a break for a couple of months, when I thought we'd got over it but soon went back to 'why'. He'll be 4 in 2 months - surely it'll finish soon

We've also got to the more in depth questions too - last week was:
"What's inside a pea?" and
" Who picks you up when you're dead?"!!!!!!!! I really didn't know what to say to this one - he just came out of it in the middle of lunch!

I remember being told to try to answer things if you can - don't just say 'I don't know' as if you do that your child will think it's wrong to have an enquiring mind. Howeever, sometimes it is the only answer

alexsmum · 02/08/2004 14:59

my ds did this for ages and then he started the "what's this made of" thing that somebody mentioned. This week he started doing the why thing again but in a really annoying voice and giggling at the same time, acknowledging that I find it annoying!! Made me laugh that his sense of humour has developed into wind ups.( if you see what i mean!)

Azure · 02/08/2004 15:10

My DS (3 at the end of the month) must have asked "why?" at least 100 times over the weekend. Aaaaaaarrrgggghhhhhh!

woodpops · 02/08/2004 15:20

Only 100 times azure?? I was glad to drop ds off at nursery this morning.

Kids are strange, but take comfort as its a sign of intelligence, apparently. My nearly 3 yr old says it all the time, and 'what you doing mummy?' when she knows full well I'm washing up or whatever. I just say, what do you think I'm doing? or try and change the subject.

Lisa78 · 02/08/2004 22:01

WHY do you ask? LOL

Lisa78 · 02/08/2004 22:02

These why phases always seem to end up with the response of "Because I said so"!!!!!!

lou33 · 02/08/2004 22:03

When it gets too much for me I just say to ask their dad.

woodpops · 03/08/2004 08:19

We had a corker last night. Ds asked why his sister had lost her willy????

OP posts:
hatmum · 03/08/2004 12:08

Don't be silly mummy - you need your willy to to do your wees, was what I was told on informing ds that girls don't have willies. And he won't be moved on that!

emsiewill · 03/08/2004 13:32

dd1 is 7, and still asks me "why" type questions - "why is that man over there talking to that lady" for example. I think they think we know everything.

It's probably my fault, 'cos I do tend to tell them that I know everything
