Have googled and searched....

We went to the polling office and there were two women outside at a table

Them: "what is your number?"
Me "who are you?"
Them: " Well we are not official"
Me "So who are you??"
Them "the conservative party"
Me: No

But they had no id, no rosettes, nothing. The way they asked for my number sounded as if they were entitled to it (but I knew better!!)

Can I complain? Who do I complain to??

why?

You need to complain to the local councils electoral office. They are responsible for security - sadly, outside the building there's not much they can do. At the time the police can make them move on but since it was earlier.....sorry you are buggered.

People doing the same at my polling station this morning, but they were wearing rosettes.

TBH i dont care who has the number, or if they know what I voted, I couldnt care less, and certainly havent got time to complain to someone about it even if it did

The only reason is that I get irationally annoyed
I thought they were cheeky in that they weren't identifying themselves and were asking for peoples numbers as if they were entitled to know.

Yes, it's a bit cheeky, but I'd agree with others it's not worth making an official complaint.

The real mystery is why they do it at all. The purpose is to find out how many of their supporters (that they've found through canvassing) have voted, so they can chase up the tardy. But when did you last see a canvasser???

DrNortherner · 04/05/2007 08:05

They were only number catching so they can chase up any supporters who have not yet voted, and it gives them an early indication of turn out.

No point complaining imo.

This is perferctly normal, reasons as DrNorthener said (although i would've expected a rosette or something TBH). Nothing to complain about IMO.
