Have been shopping like a loony to save up Tesco's points for a weekend break.
Thought I had enough and started to try and book a hotel.
Seems that there is a separate (much much much higher) pricing band if you are using Tesco points to pay.
e.g. Normal cost if paying by cash £95. Cost if paying with points £195. Bloody con. Considering how much you have to spend in the first place.
Not only that but it seems that the hotels only have so many rooms available for Tesco riff raff. Trying to book a date I actually wanted was impossible (and I had a short list of six dates!)
Not AT ALL impressed. Bloody mad in fact.
Think this is the final nail in the coffin for me and Tesco. I got told off for giving my son a grape last week.
Watch out Sainsbury's one whingeing, grape stealer on her way.

I gave up in the end. Saved up my points and tried to use them to book a weekend away in Cardiff for our wedding anniversary in September. Every hotel I contacted told me they had already used up their allotted amount of Tesco Clubcard Deals for the year - this was in January. Apart from the Hilton chain who said they still had availability - I duly got Hilton vouchers with my points and now...they won't take them, they say their allowance is used up. I assume they take one booking with vouchers and then that's it. I've just changed my hotel vouchers back to points (you have to post them back) and booked a weekend away using Real Money. I think it's a total swizz.

Wonder how many magazine subscriptions and Blockbuster vouchers I can get with the equivalent of £300 worth of Hilton hotel vouchers?

cece · 03/05/2007 19:21

My friend always gets a free Haven holiday with her voucher every summer!

tubismybub · 03/05/2007 19:25

How odd, have never experienced being charged more because of using tesco vouchers and we have used them at the Marriot about 8 times. I'm not a big fan of tesco's but we do get quite a vfew nights away in hotels thanks to them

iota · 03/05/2007 19:25

we tend to spend ours on magazine ubscriptions, days out e.g. Legoland and Bella Italia tokens

tombley · 03/05/2007 19:29

We had £585 taken off the price of our Siblu hol this year. I think there was some price difference but really not much.
I suppose it depends on the company.

snowwonder · 03/05/2007 19:31

me to used them for haven and had to pay the higher none internet price!!! i would have been much better doing the deal on the internet... than with the vouchers!!

use them for days out and restaurant vouchers now much better

charliecat · 03/05/2007 19:33

sell your 300 pounds worth on ebay. You will get about 700 cash.

charliecat · 03/05/2007 19:34

marthamoo · 03/05/2007 19:34

charliecat · 03/05/2007 19:35

marthamoo · 03/05/2007 19:42

Yes, I've just been looking I've sent my Hilton vouchers back now but when I get my Clubcard points back I'll have another look on ebay.

NadineBaggott · 03/05/2007 19:43

ah yes that first one is about giving you codes - doh!

roisin · 03/05/2007 19:44

We're using them to pay for youth hostel this year, and will pay the same price as per cash apparently. Previously we've just used them for Eurostar, theme parks, museums, zoos, London Eye, tourist buses, etc.

But apparently the attractions only get 50% of the face value of the vouchers from Tescos. (We found this out from a friendly lady at the local zoo.)

So the 'attractions' or whatever are bearing 50% of the cost - or not as seems the case with Currypowder's hotels.

But it's still a good deal to me - the vouchers effectively cost me nothing in the first place, and Tescos are paying 50% of the cost of my entertainment.

MrsWho · 03/05/2007 20:14

I have used mine for the local zoo and for a meal in Bella pasta, english heritage membership and have loads saved up for when we go to Wales!

crunchie · 03/05/2007 20:59

I use min efor P&O ferries, no difference in prices. I was thinking f saving 100 for 4 Eurostar tickets

wheresthehamster · 03/05/2007 21:39

i can't comment on hotels because I have never spent my vouchers on them but if you read the small print it always says they can't be used on special offers and I think most hotel prices for weekends are 'specials' and the cost you have been quoted for vouchers is the real price but in reality you would never pay that if you booked using cash. Does that make sense?

Holidays are the quoted brochure price but again you can't take advantage of 3 for 2 type things.

Days out - places like the Tower of London don't allow you to buy family tickets with vouchers you have to pay individual adult and child prices. This caught me out as I only had enough vouchers to cover the family ticket so had to make the rest up with cash. Grrrrr. But to be fair, it was stated in the small print had I bothered to look.

I can't count the holidays, days out, meals, anuual Tussaud passes etc we've had over the years. Also I pay for HSA and RAC every year with them.

And as someone pointed out they are FREE!

MarieCeleste · 03/05/2007 21:45

We've had very good deals in the past, including Tussauds Group annual passes. I was going to book a hol with Macdonald Hotels in the summer, but it sounds like that's not a very smart idea. Anyone else tried a Macdonald hotel? (Not to be confused with the fast food restaurant of course...)

MrsWho · 03/05/2007 21:53

Hmaster- Is HSA anygood? I keep looking at it to use my vouchers up but not sureif its worth it?

WendyWeber · 03/05/2007 22:03

I used my last collection at MFI and that was OK - c £140 for £35 worth - but that's either stopped or been modified, I think you have to buy £500 worth now (it was £250).

Was going to use next lot for cheapie parking with Purple Parking at Manc airport but didn't book in time (would have been c £15 for £60 worth, which would have been great, but I didn't book in time and it's stopped now )

charliecat · 03/05/2007 22:05

I swap them for blackpool wristbands and sell them on ebay.
