What can you ladies tell me about the area around Cleethorpes? I'm off there for a fortnight's holiday tomorrow. Staying on a caravan park.

Good restaurants, pubs, places to take the kids, shopping, etc?

Give me and hour or two to come back to you anorak. Dp was born in Cleethorpes and his parents still live there. He's just popped out to collect his ds for the weekend.

Are you staying at Thorpe Park? I think there's another park called Beachcomber?

anorak · 30/07/2004 14:36

Hi dottee. Yes we are staying at Thorpe Park. TIA.

He's still out. BTW have you been with British Holidays before?

anorak · 30/07/2004 14:56

No, why?

(He's still not here) The reason why I ask is that we went to Haggerston last year and Greenacres at Porthmadog this Easter (both British Holidays). We were generally quite pleased with the holidays. Only gripes I have is having to pay extra for some activities (bike hire at Haggerston was expensive for example). The caravans are good and well equipped and the parks are clean. The evening shows are very good. We've thought about going to Thorpe Park before.

You'll get issued with passes for entertainments etc. It took us a while to get used to at Haggerston but it became second nature at Porthmadog. BTW I loved Greenacres and it was in a lovely position - well recommended.

The shows etc. can get very busy in August. Some people get their seats early and sit it out during the childrens' entertainment (Bradley Bear and co.). It tend to thin out at 9.30pm onwards (or when Bradley Bear says goodnight). We found the quietest time for swimming was last thing in the afternoon. The pools are very clean and you've got to remove shoes before you going into the pool area.

Another gripe is having to go past the amusements slot machines) etc. frequently to get anywhere in the complex (that was bad at Haggerston).

The food is reasonable in the complex, if you want a lazy evening.

I do know there's a good fish restaurant in the middle of Cleethorpes but can't remember the name. DP will enlighten me know doubt.

Thanks for all that useful info. I await your dh's contribution...we both love eating and drinking so I'm sure we'll follow up anything he suggests.

He's back.

The fish restaurant is called 'Ernie Becketts'. Go towards the pier (central Cleethorpes) and at the pier, cross the main road and go up the street opp. pier. Ernie Becketts is on your left in the 'square'.

I asked DP about shopping. Not a good thing to ask a bloke! He just said the general seaside stuff along the prom in the centre of Cleethorpes (not Humberstone - where his parents live).

Pleasure Island is supposed to be a good theme park (I think that's near Thorpe Park).

Last year we went to Golden Sands at Mablethorpe - Haven Holidays. We managed to get down to Ingoldmells near Skegness. I don't know how far you want to travel but the market is great at Ingoldmells and it's on every day.

If you're into museums, there's the Fishing Museum at Grimsby (which I fancy going to sometime). Soemthing else that always fascinates me in Grimsby - the huge ships that bring the foreign cars over to this country and you can see all the VWs, Seats, Volvos etc. parked along the dockside. Not exactly a tourist attraction, but it might pass an hour on if it's raining.

Hope this helps!

p.s not that well up on eateries as we normally have lunch with his parents. If you go inland there's some nice country pubs (towards Humberside airport and towards Louth). I've noticed them en route.

There's the usual seaside stuff on the prom.

anorak · 30/07/2004 16:34

Thanks to you and your dp dottee. DS is mad on cars so maybe the Grimsby idea isn't so mad!

Hi Anorak

I lived in Cleethorpes 7 years ago.

Stuff to do, places to eat etc:

The Lost Shepherd - restaurant( 01472602303 56 Thrunscoe Road, Cleethorpes ) Fantastic little place, need to book in advance

Steel's Cornerhouse - excellent fish and chips (01472692644 Market Street, Cleethorpes)

Granary Restaurant - nice pub/restuarant on a little canal just outside town centre.
(01472346338 Garth Lane, Grimsby)

Lincoln Castle - near to Fishing Museum. Used to be the ferry between Grimsby and Hull across the Humber before the Humber Bridge was built.(01472242945 Alexandra Dock North, Grimsby)

To do:
Usual Beach/funfair/pier in Cleethorpes
Pleasure Island for the kids.
Walk along the sand dunes to Humbersstone (there is a cycle path all the way)
Seaview Street in Cleethorpes - nice little old shops.
Best Shopping in Freshney Centre, Grimsby
Fishing Heritage Museum is a must.
Walk around the fish docks is interesting
Peoples Park in Cleethorpes nice for a picnic.

If you can get out to the wolds , Louth is a lovely market town (good Thai restaurant there too)

Hope you have some lovely weather!! Enjoy.

Gingerbear · 30/07/2004 17:39
