suedonim, pruni, mistymoo and anyone else in the know - tell me about living in Thurso and/or Wick

Namechanging regular (sorry but need to keep this a secret from those who know me in RL atm!)

Thinking of relocating to Thurso or Wick (Thurso is ahead by a whisker atm). Currently live in Scotland and used to rural/remote etc.

Any info about either place would be gratefully received, thanks!

Incidentally, do you know how hard it is to search for information on Wick on here? Type in "wick" and you get 330 messages, most of which consist of people moaning about what gets on their wick ... (or Hampton Wick, or occasional discussions about candles)

LOL, thanks Pruni! I knew you wouldn't put a positive slant on Wick but then I'm not looking for sugar coated answers, just a bit of realism!

Not worried about the nothing to do bit, where we live there really is nothing! Good to hear about the academy (is that the high school?) at Thurso.

I did see a bit of that doc actually! Hmm, my kids have always lived in v. rural places and tbh they have never had as much as Wick/Thurso would have to offer them - never lived near a swimming pool, cinema or anywhere with cubs/brownies etc. So certainly at this point I feel they would have loads of choice compared to previously.

I stayed in Wick and Thurso on a camping holiday as a kid - liked Thurso as it had some gift shops, but the most exciting thing about Wick was getting a shower in the toilets.

It was possibly the most boring place I have ever visited in my entire life.

Sorry

Tamum · 30/04/2007 22:55

I knew it loony- sounds exciting

loony · 30/04/2007 22:56

LOL I'm beginning to think it was a bit pointless changing my name ...

Fubsy I visited Thurso and John O'Groats as a teenager and came away with a similar impression ...

Hellooooo! Anything I say has to be treated with caution because it's more than 20yrs since we lived there. I can't say I ever took to Wick although it did have a Boots there which would order stuff in so was quite useful. Also had a nice bookshop near the harbour. But that's about all I can think of, hehe!

We liked Thurso for the freedom our children had, the lack of crime and the friendliness. The main downside was lack of shopping choice and stuff like theatres and cinemas. It now has proper supermarkets and of course the internet will have revolutionised mail order. I believe some sort of theatre group set up at one point but am not sure about a cinema. Schools were good but again, I'm out of date as to their performance nowadays. The countryside is gorgeous, if you like 'bleak' and the beaches are fab - the ?UK surfing championships have just been held there. There's plenty to do if you're an outdoorsy type or a bit alternative.

I'm not so sure how older children would feel about living there. Ime, they seem to fall into two categories; those like Pruni who can't wait to get out and those who go away to uni then go back, never to leave the place again.

We know people who live near Thurso, we have visited them, if it wasn't for the fact that we like these people - I wouldn't bother. The place bores me rigid and I live in a rural area. Their kids (2 boys, 2 girls) can't wait to leave - this was confirmed by their eldest DS who came to stay last summer, he genuinely hates the place and I can't tell you how sad I felt for him. A decision like that depends on how old your children are/employmen opportunities/how long you plan on staying IMO.

I've worked briefly in the area. Beautiful beaches in Sutherland, but very very remote.

great Scottish/Indian/Chinese restaurant in Thurso.
