We need a skip

Sorry to ask such boring questions but we need one, just for one afternoon, and I have been quoted £160. This seems so expensive, or am I just clueless.
Also, do we need a permit from the council or will the skip company organise this?

That sounds similar to what I was told (for a Big One) I'm afraid!

flipflopper · 30/04/2007 13:07

Yep, thats about right.
You don't need any permits, that's what you pay all that money for them to do it! They have to pay a charge for dumping it in the landfill.

Oh dear! Would a man with a van be cheaper then? It's for two carpets we are ripping up and a broken chest of drawers, so not much really.

Doesn't ypour localcouncil ahve a collection service for this type of thing? We have 'Bulky Bob' who you book by ringing up the council and they give you a date and take it off you free of charge.

flipflopper · 30/04/2007 13:12

God, I wouldnt hire a skip for that. Cant you get the carpets in the car? I would smash the drawers up and get them in the car too.
We are having to hire a skip in the near future but its for tonnes and tonnes of breeze blocks and rubble that we are ripping out of the garden

DH is away with the car at the moment and I need to get rid of them asap as I am having a sanding machine delivered on Thursday.
I hadn't thought about the council collection, but it may be too late to book now.
I always cause myself far too much hassle for the simplest things by being so bloody disorganised, lol.

I wouldn't hire a skip for that either!! Can't they wait outside til your DH is back??

heifer · 30/04/2007 13:22

We have just paid £70 for one for 2 weeks (on our drive)..

haggisaggis · 30/04/2007 13:23

You could get a mini skip which would be cheaper - but try the council first.
(we have to pay the council for "special uplifts" - £35 for up to 3 items!)

freecycle them freecycle.org people will want bits of the carpet for sheds and compost bins and allotments and the chest of drawers, someone will want them. www.freecycle.org.

Inrockuptible · 30/04/2007 13:26

Thanks, I have tried freecycle but no one is interested. The carpets are that hideous office grade stuff and look about 30 years old. The drawers are beyond repair.
I've just found a few man with a van adverts so I'll call some of them.
