oh we tried, we tried and we tried, dh and I last night. We tried for two sodding hours and then grilled the food

We have a barbeque with a lid. It has a vent at the base which would cause air to get to the coals and a vent in the top.

We tried the little firelighter blocks with all vents open and the lid shut - it went out.

we tried firelighter blocks and paper with all vents open and the lid shut - it went out

We tried with the lid up - it went out

we went to the shop and got some gel - it went out

we tried stacking the coals in a pyramid as stated on the side of the bottle and left the top up - it went out.

What are we doign wrong?

Appreciate that some people are hunter gatherers and some aren't and we obvioulsy aren't but we should be able to light a bloody barbeque? Or do we have to save up and get a gas one?

Help??????

you need more paraffin gel

lots, then stand well back

(or buy a gas one)

We don't have a gas one and ours always lights. I think DH has bags of BBQ coal, which he sets fiore to, and then as it burns the coals in it spread over the BBQ. i am usually sitting down with a glass of wine by this point though so don't pay too much attention

Not petrol.
Baby Bel wax is quite fun for firelighting though.
