Does anybody think that this should be banned?
Lets face it passive smoking can be fatal adults will be protected in pubs and restaurants.
So why not children who have no choice but to be stuck in a car whilst their parents are puffing away.

{sharp intake of breath} its a bit off of people smoking in cars with children in......not really giving the best start is it.

UpsadaisyTidalturning · 28/04/2007 19:45

Definately should be banned is what I meant.

lulumama · 28/04/2007 19:47

i think it is horrible, but how can you legislate against it?

if people do not realise it is terribly unhealthy, bringing in a law won;t stop them....

also, where would it end? stopping parents feeding their kids a McDonalds ? saturdated fat is bad for you too....

also, don;t think the police forces have the resources to watch out for this and pull people over

themaskedposter · 28/04/2007 19:54

NEVER EVER EVER - EVER

surely no-one does this these days??!??!?!!?

madamez · 28/04/2007 19:54

FFS is there no end to the amount of poke-nosing, interfering, timewasting legislation some of you want? Yes, smoking is unhealthy and doesn't do children any favours. But two or three whole generations of kids grew up in perpetually smoke-laden atmospheres and most of them made it to adulthood with only the average amount of coughs and colds - and they haven't all subsequently developed lung cancer either.

Currently, people seem to blame every twinge, itch or bout of mild existential despair on the fact that someone ones smoked within three miles of them. Smoking isn't good for debeloping youthful lungs, but nor is DRIVING F*ING FUME_SPEWING CARS! Or lving near pylons. Or eating anything that you, the mother, hasn't actually sweated hard and burned her fingers to produce.

Just chill, eh.

casmumof3 · 28/04/2007 19:56

my dear sil did it with my children two of whom she knows have asthma.
I hasten to add that i now refuse to speak to her,{this was the perfect excuse.

So madamez if you saw someone smoking in thir car with all the windows shut and a young baby in the car it wouldnt bother you.

I was in the car park of Asda the other day and this mother pulled up witha tiny baby in a car seat and the silly mare was smoking away with the windows closed. Then she threw the fag but out of the window.

I agree that smoking in a car with children in it should be legislated against it. It can be enforced by the same people who are enforcing the smoking ban in Wales

madamez · 28/04/2007 22:37

Casmum: I have to say that I'm not actually that observant and usually have my head full of things like work/money worries/ will DS poo in his nappy and then try to take it off. So I'd probably not take that much notice of what someone else was doing in a car if there wasn't a lot of screaming going on.

Mind you, as someone who knows a few smokers and has ridden in cars with them, most smokers open the windows when smoking in cars, it seems to me. Otherwise you rapidly have a problem seeing out.

KnayedFrot · 28/04/2007 22:43

I would rather the police got the existing problems of people breaking the law by e.g. using mobile phones while driving / not putting their children in a child seat, before we introduce any more legislation which most people who do it will take not a blind bit of notice of.

KnayedFrot · 28/04/2007 22:45

God did that sentance make any sense at all.

What i meant was, when we can successfully police the things that are already against the law, then we can introduce more legislation.

CountTo10 · 28/04/2007 22:49

Having a window open in a car when you smoke in it makes no difference. As I found out when dp bought ds home when he was about 4mths old after being out. He'd had a fag in the car with the window open thinking it was ok. He bought him in and he and his car seat absolutely reeked of smoke so non starter for me.

Now, I think if its deemed acceptable use of time for the police to stop drivers who are driving with kids under the age of 11 not in proper car seats, I don't think its wrong to stop those who are smoking should it be banned. Personally I think smoking when driving should be banned altogether. If you can't be on a phone or eat when at the wheel, why is it acceptable to smoke? As an ex smoker, I know how difficult it is to light a fag whilst trying to steer round a corner and change gear!!! As well as the effect when it flies back in your window and lands in your lap!!!

madamez · 28/04/2007 22:53

Countto10 actually that's a pretty good point. Smoking while driving is certainly as potentially dangerous as phoning, texting, putting on makeup, eating or drinking (and indeed nose-picking - anyone else remember the urban legend of the bloke having a good root around who got rammed by the driver behind and damn near hooked his own brain out?)

kittypants · 28/04/2007 22:56

my mum does this with my children.ive spoken to her about it and she says she no longer does with them but i can smell it on them

2shoesismad · 28/04/2007 23:52

is it ok if you hang your head out of the window inbetween puffs?

FiveFingeredFiend · 28/04/2007 23:55

Piss off!

mamazon · 28/04/2007 23:56

nice

ChelseaDagger · 29/04/2007 00:02

You don't have to hold your head out of the window anyway. Just hold the fag out - don't strain your neck 2shoes.

FiveFingeredFiend · 29/04/2007 00:02

In reply to OP btw - don't come over all sanctimonious the pair of you ( 2 shoues and Mamazon) i know youbetter

Anoush · 29/04/2007 00:03

I would never do this, and I would kill my DP if he started to light up if I was driving. If we want to smoke, then we stop, one goes away for a cig, then another. Or, the sensible thing we dont have one!

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 29/04/2007 00:05

If you can legislate against smoking in pubs to protect the bar staff, then I don't see why not really.

Although I'd much rather people weren't selfish and stupid and could regulate themselves.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 29/04/2007 00:07

What a horrible phrase 'regulate themselves'. Sounds like it's something to do with bowel movements. I do apologise!

2shoesismad · 29/04/2007 00:15

thanks for the tip chelsea I was getting a cold neck
