Smelly walking sandals - what to do?

This summer I have been wearing Merrell walking sandals nearly every day and ds Timberland ones. They are great but whatever we do, they are really smelly! I have put them in the washing machine on delicate with soap powder, but it only lasted a few days before smelly again. I have tried in vain to clean them with foot refresher wipes and even a raw lemon. Ds's keyworker even mentioned the smell to him and asked him to take them off for a few hours. I think it is some reaction with sweat and the plastic. BTW we both have very good personal hygiene!

yes I know the problem. I have stopped wearing mine as a result. In theory I suppose it is a bacterial reaction which causes the pong so an anti-bacterial treatment might work, tho' I haven't got round to trying it yet. Any household cleaner with an anti-bacterial content might do it, or tea tree oil?

Try making a thin paste of baking soda and water, painting it on and leaving for 20m or so, then washing off. I don't know if it works for sweat, but it does for another bodily fluid: vomit!

apparently Milton fluid is the stuff, although I've never tried it. I have an old manky toothbrush that I scrub my Merrels with, using a dilute solution of washing up liquid with bleach (about 1:20 bleach). They rarely smell.

My slippers on the other hand......
