It's that time of year - the ones in Chiddingfold in Sussex are good and apparently there are lovely ones (as you'd expect) at Kew.

Where are the best bluebell woods near you?
TIA

Harpsichordcarrier - a great place just outside Oxford is the Harcourt Arboretum nr Nuneham Courtney. We went last weekend and there's an absolute carpet of them, really lovely.

Went to Dockey Wood, part of the Ashridge Estate today. Fab carpet of blue.

Might post some pics if anyone wants.

MrsSchadenfreude · 26/04/2007 21:06

Harpsi - where are you? There's Christmas Common, in Oxon which used to be fantastic for bluebells when I was small, plus the Bluebell Wood at Ruscombe, near Twyford in Baaarkshoire!

NiceCuppaTea · 26/04/2007 21:08

Can't believe no-one's mentioned the Chilterns - they are absolutely covered in them. Anywhere... beautiful! Just a shame that they are not the most pushchair-friendly place

paulaplumpbottom · 26/04/2007 21:08

By the waterfalls in Glenariff

kittylette · 26/04/2007 21:10

my front garden, loads of them and i dont like them

MuffinMclay · 26/04/2007 21:10

There are masses in the woods at Ashridge (National Trust place near Tring, Herts). Lots in the woods just across the road from me too (also Herts) but they're a secret. Even better than Ashridge.....

NiceCuppaTea · 26/04/2007 21:12

Oh, and to add to min912 - the Harcourt Arboretum is gorgeous at any time of year. Especially in the autumn, when it's just like a little New England Forest. Great for escaping the hustle and bustle...

filthymindedvixen · 27/04/2007 12:19

ratclare - please, is that the lane that kind of skirts the castle (without going into the castle grounds 'proper'?)

would like to know for this weekend!

filthymindedvixen · 27/04/2007 12:20

MerryMarigold · 27/04/2007 17:38

oh muffin, please, please PLEASE tell. it won't go far if just mumsnetters...

NotanOtter · 27/04/2007 19:50

filthymindedvixen.....go to ilkley ( where are you coming from?) go to the centre of ilkley turn downwards (towards Lido) depends which direction you approach from ! Then at telephone box (junction with denton road) turn right - park when you get to suspension bridge and pebble beach and go in woods there!
I will help more if i can!

Ellbell · 27/04/2007 19:55

Harpsi

Not sure where you are, but try the woods at Bramley Frith. In Hants, but very near Berks (c. 20 mins from Reading). Beautiful, but most of the time you can't get in to them, just walk round the edge. But a friend who lives nearby says that the woods are opened up at limited times to let people in to see the bluebells.

choosyfloosy · 27/04/2007 20:04

BRILLIANT thread - i've been vaguely thinking about starting this one for two years.

When I was a kid - the woods along the road near Ightham Mote, Kent were our school bluebell walk - the path by the road and across the fields between Ightham Mote and Plaxtol (can't believe I can't remember its name).

Great tip re Harcourt Arboretum.

Goodwood Sculpture Park was great for bluebells last weekend (East Sussex, just north of Chichester).

Ellbell · 27/04/2007 20:08

Bramley Frith

Wasn't very clear before. It's an electricity sub station (or something) which is why you can't get in (though there is a public footpath all round). But there is an environmental education centre there too (which, google tells me, is currently closed). Haven't lived in Bramley for about 13 years, but the bluebells used to be wonderful.

MuffinMclay · 27/04/2007 21:13

MerryM - it is a North Herts village. That is all I'm saying. Technically I think the wood is private land, but I sneak through with my dog when nobody is looking.

In truth, they're a little past their best now.

2shoes · 27/04/2007 23:16

dunford hollows near midhurst

sohappyicouldcry · 27/04/2007 23:22

filthymindedvixen · 28/04/2007 10:57

no thanks NOA - i know where you mean, as we have walked along by suspension bridge! Thanks
