Am I over-reacting here?

My sil has just bought a collie puppy and wanted my dh to take dd (aged 22 months) over to see it today, during its first visit to her house (they will be having it to live there properly in a few weeks). My reaction was that this was asking for trouble - my dd loves animals but is quite boisterous and tends to get over-excited - she is also not very good at stroking; it tends to be more like grabbing IYKWIM! We have a cat, friends have dogs but they are all older, and more tolerant than I imagine a new puppy would be.
Does anybody think I am over-reacting (DH does), and at what age would you say a puppy can be safely introduced to a toddler (always under supervision, of course)?

I don't think you are over-reacting as such, if I was in your sitiuation I would be reluctant to allow this visit because I couldn't be doing with the hassle of constantly trying to separate puppy form toddler. It would be too dull.

But if your Dh is willing to spend the entire duration of the visit (am I right in thinking you aren't going) wrangling both of them and dealing with the resultant tears when DD finds she can't treat it like a toy then let him and you put your feet up.

A friend of mine paid a vast amount of money for a Canaan dog, like a Rhodesian Ridgback, the poor thing was convinced her two small children were other puppies and wanted to play jumping and play-fighting with them all the time. She sent i t back.

I don't think you're over-reacting at all.
If it's the pups first visit then it won't know what the hell is going on. You daughter will obviously think it's adorable and want to play and puppies scartch and nip alot with their teeth in play.
I have a boxer dog and a 3 year old daighter so am not at al anti pets and kids but i think that situation is a recipe for disaster!
