He's NT, had poor fine motor skills when assessed at 4 but has never been an issue since so it's not a capability issue he just cannot figure it out and it's driving me insane!

We've tried various methods found online, lots of videos, physically showing him and tried getting others to show him but nothing seems to click. He gets as far as the first loop (after 4 years of practice) then it all falls apart.

Any tried and tested methods I might not have come across or is he destined to be in velcro/lock laces/tucked in shoe laces forever?!

I can't tie my laces the "normal" way and I'm 44!
I make two separate loops, like bunny ears and then cross these over and tuck one through the gap and pull tight. I worked out the way that worked for me after years of being berated for being too stupid to tie my own laces. Hopefully your son will find a way that works for him too.
He isn't left handed is he? I am and all of the other people I know with the same problem are lefties too.

Yes, DS could only manage the make two loops and tie them together method. It really is much easier. He mostly just shoves his shoes on and off without undoing but occasionally has to do laces!

Oh yes, that was my brother - he's a structural engineer Hmm. He's 36 now and always walking around with undone laces Grin

When I was a child we first learned by creating two loops and tiring them together like an ordinary knot. Once we did this without issue we moved on to ordinary shoe tying. I think that the idea was to prevent to loops putting us off.
