Next door's children, 6 and 10, love my daughter so much that they look over the fence every chance they get.

This means that I feel under constant surveilance, and having any time to myself in my own garden is non existant.
I know that my daughter likes them, and encourages them to chat, yet I cant even open my back door without them popping up!

I like to go out for a fag, or sometimes make a phone call.

They are very noisy, they really scream, and their mum swears and screams back at them, yet the noise I feel i can put up with, if I didnt also have to be watched all the time!

I want to make my fence higher.

How would I explain what I have done to the mum? I want to say something about wanting more privacy, without saying-your kids are doing my head in.

I feel getting the fence higher, would be the solution, because I cant expect the kidies not to look over all time, they prob dont even know they r doing it, its natural.

I forgot how bad it became, cos now the summer is here, we are all out in our gardens.

stick trellis at the top ... plant ivy or climbing roses

it'll be a garden feature and no explanation needed

nextdoorskids · 20/04/2007 09:21

i thought about trellis, but it will the plants wont grow fast enuff for my liking!!!!!!!!!!!

Is your fence the type that you can attach a trellis to the top? I would even if it would only give you an extra foot. You can then plant some climbers and let them cover the fence.
Kids will be kids and as soon as they hear something, they will look over. At my old house, we used to have a dog and as soon as the kids heard him outside, they would look over the fence and he would go barmy, barking and jumping up. I eventually told the kids to pack it in as they were tormenting him. Next thing I knew, mother was round shouting the odds! Had to explain to her what they were doing and she accepted it and from then on, they still looked over but not as frequent.

did name change but there wasnt really a point!!

Its about 41/2 foot my fence, and i know its about 8 meters long.

It is wooden, cheapo stuff, lots of veticals.

If i did the plant thing, i am sure they would wreck it. They get their chairs and stand on them to see over. How could i attach an extension to the fence!!! perhaps I need to buy 3 or 4 new panels, and drill them to the existing ones.

gawd

how about just putting up a higher fence and if she asks, just shrug and say oh yeah, i had to, old one was wobbly and rotting in places, looked awful...

mytwopenceworth · 20/04/2007 09:36

great minds, eh Pruni?!

gess · 20/04/2007 09:37

Good luck, ds1 gets a kitchen chair and a periscope so he can see over our 8 foot fence (plus trellis).

These are housing asscociation homes, and are barley a year old, sorry shuold have sadi, the fence is new, and shiny!!

Will have to bite the bullet, and just say, i need a bit more privacy, but your kids are welcome to spy thru the knot holes they have pusjed out with their 'nosey' fingers .

pirategirl · 20/04/2007 09:40

Fio, lol, my goodness, a grown up, getting a chair--thats bad!!

Neighbours, its tough one.

custy · 20/04/2007 09:45

you could say your sick of the cat shit in the garden - have to warn youbecuase i am going to be putting some stuff on the top of my side of the fence - but it might stain hands or clothes.

put trellis up nd put vandel grease on it.

alternatively you can say fuckoff you little fuckers.

That Golden Hop stuff rec. by Pruni looks great if it can grow that fast.

We have a similar prob in that we've had all the trees taken down along our boundary and the guy next door who owns but doesn't live in the house has very kindly put in a 5 foot fence but it just isn't high enough. I was thinking of putting trellis up and saying that we're putting it up in advance of him getting tenants in (so hopefully not upsetting him - his kids play in the garden every weekend and bounce up & down to see in to our garden.)

custy--wet myself-my sentiments at times.

i stand in my kitchen, and i hear them shout my daughters name, and im like 'fuck right off' to myself!!!

Yes, the grease stuff, new slant, good one.
my cat IS being bullied atm.

yes the fence is at eyeball height, so its embarrasing for my neighbour too, at we keep catching each other's eye and feeling obliged to say hi. But of course thats not too bad.

i saw some screening liek bamboo, but that might be too wavy, if just attatched to the top. good for picking at too.

mumblechum · 20/04/2007 09:56

Cheers, Pruni, I've just phoned my dh and asked him to pick up some & some trellis today, and I'll approach the other guy tonight. We've just had a major landscaping job done but to be honest, it's a bit spoiled when you feel like you're being watched (even tho' we prob. aren't.)

pirategirl · 20/04/2007 09:57

ok, so golden hop, pruni, how do i strat if off, i am absolutely hopeless with garden stuff.
But want to know more. my mum was always gardening.

or maybe i could get trelis and stick astro turf to it lol. thats my idea of greenfingers.

pirategirl · 20/04/2007 09:58

get him to get me some too!!! mumble.

thats the thing, i dont drive so need to get osmeone to take me to a garden centre.

mumblechum · 20/04/2007 10:59
