Is anyone here a Rainbows/Brownies leader or unit helper?

I'm considering volunteering. I've sent off for the details and now I have a contact name and number. Before I make that phonecall, perhaps you could give me an idea of what is involved.

It is a long time since I was a Brownie/Guide and my DDs have not yet reached the age for Rainbows.

I was thinking of volunteering as a Rainbow unit leader initially but would also consider Brownies. Which would be best? Or should I find out where the demand is?

I'm a Rainbow Guider. The posters say its just one hour a week don't they? Well, if you just want to help at a unit it would be, but if you want to become a member, it will be a lot more. It depends on how much time you've got to offer really. Speaking from expirence in this District, learn to say no. I know that sounds terrible, but some ladies are so into Guiding and they expect everyone to be the same. I love doing Rainbows of course, but not to the detriment of my own family.

Just realised its school run time - I'll continue later!

Right I'm back! I would suggest that you stick with Rainbows at the moment, that way your dds can join you when they are old enough. You can be either a member or non member unit helper. Obviously non-member is just turn up, help a bit and leave, but if you want to be a member there is a lengthy leadership programme that you have to complete. Most of it is straight forward and you will get a mentor to help you though it. Most of the things covered are things that you will do in your unit meetings or District meetings. You will have to set up a bank account for your unit and be expected to run it & provide unit accounts annually.
I'm making this sound too much like hard work, especially as its voluntary but tbh the fun you have really does make it worth while! I guess you have looked at Guidinguk.org.uk, theres lots of stuff on there. What area of the country to you live in?

I would recommend helping at a unit first and then when you know what goes on you can do the leadership training.Thats what I have done.I really enjoy it and its amazing how much other peoples kids like you

Agree with mrswho, I used to help my brown owl friend out before I had ds but realised it would have been too much for me too get in an deeper than that, iyswim, once I had him (not that it would be for everyone though)

Thanks to all that responded. I will initially volunteer as a helper and see where that takes me.
