Am I right to feel angry with dd's school?

Dd1 had her sports day today, she is year 7 of a secondary school. I knew she was going to be in two races, and would be outside for them. However what I didn't know, and have had no letters telling me, was that she was going to be outside for the whole day watching all the other events. It was quite hot and sunny here, and she has come home from school with a terrible red face, back of neck, and thighs, she really is quite badly burnt.

Now she says she is feeling unwell, and tbh doesn't look too good.

My gut reaction is to fire off a letter to the school, asking them why I was not informed she would be outside all day, as I could have provided a hat and suncream, because I am really cross. Should add that dd1 is white blonde and with v pale skin.

Would wise mumsnetters feel the same?

Dadslib used to post on MN and caused huge controversy.

lou33 · 20/07/2004 13:34

Have been given a reprieve, a rl friend is picking me up now.

I think a lot of people are suspicious of anyone posting under similar names as dadslib used, that's all. He was booted off and came back as nicksie. Don't take it personally

Do you guys all know each other then? I feel a bit guilty for interupting your chat last night!

Nickinha · 20/07/2004 13:42

Terribly sorry if you all feel that I am trying to cause trouble. I am just that type of person who beleives there is two sides to a story and I believe in forgiveness. I am always trying to protect those who cant speak for themselves, and give everyone the benefit of the doubt. Rest assured, if it was you who had done something to hurt/upset you, I would in your absence defend you too. When I was pregnant, I contracted HELP syndromea dn my doctor misdiagnosed me. Ended up in a life threatning emergency cs. The doctor was mortified - I was just glad there was someone to recognise it. Still go see the same doctor, hell, I make mistakes too!!! Sadly this one was life threatning - but I did not die, so why wallow in it... what is him saying sorry (which he never did) going to change anything?

Thanks Twiglett for that - you know how to reassure someone! Just as I have sat down, I hear my little DD has just woken up from her nap so I'm going to have to go. Catch you all later. XX

I have feet in both camps a bit here.
My dd is also very fair and if I thought she was going to be outside at all on a hot day at school (even if it was just for a couple of races and perhpas a short spell of spectating I would have anticipated an hour or more) I would have made sure she had suncream and a hat with her.
However if the school plans to keep the kids outside all day (and I understand the reasons why they might have to have them all in one place) then I think they have a duty not just to inform you but to ensure that the kids are adequately protected from the sun, and that means providing shade or ensuring they're covered up for most of the day as TBH even with factor 60 on my dd, and lots of other fair skinned kids, would burn if outside all day.

Hi Lou, Having grown up in South Africa I have had my share of the "lobster red" experience! Try and get hold of some Aloe Gel from a health store. Works a treat at getting rid of the redness and sting.

lou33 · 20/07/2004 17:02

Rowlers, barging in is the way to do it

Bee, thanks, I will have a look for the aloe gel

V red DG. Not as sore now, but I haven't let her out all day.

Did you go to the school or send the letter then? Suppose you've been a bit rushed off your feet today tho. How did DS fitting go?

lou33 · 20/07/2004 17:19

The printer packed up so have only just been able to print it out, but i will send it in tomorrow with dd. I have started a thread in sn about ds

She went back for the last day. Her face is pink rather than red now, but her neck is pretty much the same, just not as sore. I haven't heard anything from the school, and they have broken up now. She got an excellent school report though

Delgirl · 22/07/2004 15:45

Hi Lou - so have all dd's & ds's broken up now? Does this mean a lie in until 12 everyday then?

lou33 · 22/07/2004 15:56

Yes they have, but ds1 and ds2 decided to wake up at 7.30, which they never do even on a schol day! I refused to let them out of bed though, until a more decent hour (i.e when dd1 was up to get them breakfast )
