princesscc · 14/04/2007 23:04

I'm a really bad Rainbow Guider, I've got Rainbows on Monday and I don't know what to do with them! I know, I know, I should have the whole term sorted! I've done most weeks, but just not this Monday. What shall I do with them? I've got 2 newies and possibily only about 5 others because I forgot that Monday was an inset day for most of them! God, I really am bad aren't I! Please help me - I know there are at least two of you out there! MrsWho I'm talking about you!!

hi. i was one. left when I moved here 2 years ago (one of my ex-girls Mum is on hre if you need a reference LOL)- she posts as Oimirian.

Trying to remember, do you have a theme?

Girls fave was when we put towels everywhere, did feet paintings and then did pedicures n each other (art and health care). Also liked going for a Spring Walk (with guides of things to tick when they spotted), making little books about what they ahd done over easter (or pupperts and giving a show on same theme is an easy variation). Oh and handy butterflies- cut round your hand in tissue paper (different or iridescent colours best), make a central bosy from card then overlap hands, attaching 'wrists' to the body so fingers flutter out, and the layers overlap.

princesscc · 14/04/2007 23:28

We haven't got a theme. I might do a spring walk though in a few weeks. I'll have to get permission first before I do that. We are right in the middle of a built up area, so we are unlikely to see anything that wonderful, but hey oh! We could make butterflies actually. I had thought of doing a big hand print Rainbow. Its one of the elements of the Roundabout badge (if you've been out for 2 years, you probably don't know the new programme & Roundabouts!) so butterflies would tie in nicely. Thankyou. I will make a note of Oimirian, ta!

I've been "out" even longer .. 4 years ... if your going down the butterfly route .. have you got a copy of "the Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle ..they'll enjoy that because they'll know it. You can talk about things growing from seed into flowers and the changes they will have seen around them to do with spring.

PeachyChocolateEClair · 15/04/2007 12:29

Actually I was there for the roundabout swap over thing, and my predecessor wasvery involved with all that being established.

MrsWho · 15/04/2007 13:31

How did you know I do?

We are doing people who help us type topic and will be meeting a policewoman, fireman, nurse and lots of things about being safe. There is actually 3 of us and we take it in turns to organise a week so I actually have no idea yet what we are doing tomorrow

princesscc · 15/04/2007 16:26

Thankyou ladies! Oh and Mrs Who, you mentioned it on another thread the other day about me going to London with the Guides!! (If someone can be of use to me, I make a note! ) What region are you all and are we likely to meet up I wonder? I'm in LASER.

Ah couldn't remember mentioning it under this name!

I am the other end of the country-Cumbria

pelvicflawed · 15/04/2007 19:25

I'm a disorganised guide guider with not a lot planned for Monday's meeting (but i guess I can use the excuse that the guides need to be doing much of the terms planning!!). Anyway when I'm looking for inspiration I pinch a lot of ideas from BOGUK (best of guiding UK) - guidinguk.freeservers.com/use-site.html I think there is plenty of rainbow stuff there - good luck with Monday!!

Kbear · 15/04/2007 19:31

What have you been doing with yourself all day FGS, call yourself a Guider?

And she is usually Mrs Super Organised when it comes to Rainbows too.

MrsWho · 15/04/2007 19:58

Thanks for the link pelvicflawed am off to check it out!

trillium · 15/04/2007 20:07

Can anybody tell me if there is a way of finding out where the nearest Brownie/Guide/Scout pack is?

We live in a rural area and I've no idea how to find the local meetings.

I was a guide and loved it, and would like dd to join.

Dd is just seven so what would be right for her age?

Am I right in thinking that girls can join Scouts nowadays?

Any advice gratefully received.

MrsWho · 15/04/2007 20:29

7 to start brownies no idea how old for cubs/scouts.

AFAIK groups are usually attached to a church so you could ask at the local one or possibly someone on here may know your area and /or someone to contact.

trillium · 15/04/2007 20:39

Thanks MrsWho.

What are Rainbow Guides?

MrsWho · 15/04/2007 20:40

Age 5-7 leave after their 7th b'day (usually the next term)

princesscc · 15/04/2007 20:52

Like the website pelvicflawed, its on my favourites list! I've got your name now, so watch out! Right, I've decided that this week, as I won't have very many, due to inset day at local school not on my calendar, I'm going to do hand prints. I hate doing paint usually, but just this once. With a bit of luck, I'll have 1:1! Then we are going to make a rainbow of hand prints to stick up on our notice board (roundabouts - love - helping hands) and then if there's time, make butterflies (thanks PCE!) from the spare hand prints!

And to return the favour to you guys - next week we are making dragon masks for St Georges Day and the following week the Young Leaders are making Sunrise drinks for Roundabouts - Learn.

Oh and Kbear - anytime my dear, anytime. {she says in her usual bitter & twisted tone of voice}

trillium - if you look on the Guiding Uk website, you should be able to find a link there for your area. girlguiding.org.uk. Not sure about Scouting, but once you've got Guiding they should know the Scouting groups.

MrsWho · 15/04/2007 21:02

Thats what I was looking for but couldn't find it on that site

princesscc · 15/04/2007 21:17

There's an 0800 number on the Contact Us link at the top of the home page

OP posts:
trillium · 15/04/2007 21:20

I can't see where to find out information on that site.

On the transfer section it mentions a transfer card with a freephone number to call, to find out details of a contact for a new area, but doesn't give the number.

Is there not a national database of packs?

trillium · 15/04/2007 21:21

Doh, crossed posts. Thanks I'll have another look.

MrsWho · 15/04/2007 21:23

I thought that there would be , or at tleast the contact for each area

PeachyChocolateEClair · 15/04/2007 21:25

Just- be careful how you make the butterfly bodies

I painted mine brown, and ahd my YL runninga round singing Mr hanky The Christmas Poo!! She had a fair point

Best St gerorges day we ha, we did an english Food tasting- cheeses apples pasties etcm but also things like mustard / chitneys that many girls hadn't tried.

Really miss it but there isn't one here to help with, and not enough time to set one up alone.

This thread just inspired me to put the boys names down for Cubs- thank you!

trillium · 15/04/2007 21:34

Thanks for your help everyone.

I've got a feeling that the nearest group to us is a Scout pack that is about 30 miles away. I'm hoping to find something a bit nearer.

I've got the phone numbers for both Scouts and Guides now, and will give them a ring tomorrow.

I'm just surprised that it's so difficult to find out details of local groups. I'd imagined that I'd be able to enter my postcode and search that way. Ho hum.

Thanks again.
