A good place to eat In Edinburgh

Me and my DH are off to the Royal Garden Party at Holyrood next week, we are going child free. Can anyone recommend a good place to eat in Edinburgh that serves more than the little sliver in the middle of the plate?

Oh must tell you all this, a fortnight ago we went out with a crowd of our friends for a chinese and then onto the local "disco". I got totally and completely smeeked, apparently came round the corner of the said establishment, with the fingers gripping the corner wall and feet going everywhere!. Made curious sheep noises on the way home, and sang, came home fell asleep husband went to bed without me, and I cannot remember anything of this, but I can assure you I had a bloody sore head the next day, and couldn't eat until 4.00 pm on the sunday, what is even worse my eldest niece was out as well! and thinks I'm a complete nutter!

Anyone else had a really good night recently and if you did what did you get up to?

Tigger2, this sounds like quite a few of my nights, actually!!! Except I don't usually make it out of the house, but instead get out loads of decent c.ds and dare I say it, records and boogie on down in the sitting room! It has given my children quite an education in music, though they have started to notice that the funky tracks tend to be at the beginning of the evening, slowly disintigrating into some kind of morbid durge as the hours go by and I relive my fantasy affair with David Bowie

There is much to be said for a good bottle of plonk and a bit of a groove

See if you can get yourselves booked in to the Witchery By The Castle for the ultimate romantic night out! Or the Atrium at the Royal Lyceum is really good too.
My dh says I should tell you to go to the Maharajahs curry house on Forrest Road, but I would avoid this like the plague if I were you as he likes it cos it's the fave boys stag night place. Good curry though! The other place which is supposed to be good though I have never been is the Tower restaurant in the new Museum on Chambers Street.
I lived in Edinburgh for 7 yrs while a student and starting out at work, so have an encyclopardic knowledge of bars, kebeb shops, chippies and pizza places, but have now exhausted my knowledge of posh places as the one place I liked the best shut down.
Have a great time!!!

oxocube, oh god I too have had a fantasy affair with David Bowie - still have, it's been going on for decades. I wonder if we'll get over it one day?

CAM Soo funny!! Which particular 'personna' is your favourite? Personally, I found that the skinnier and more drug-riddled/at death's door he looked, the sexier I found him!!! His 'Diamond Dogs' period has fantastic memories for me, best not gone into on this site. Needless to say, all my growing up was whilst listening to Bowie.

Keep grooving!! Love oxocube xx

Hard to say as DB can do no wrong in my eyes - when I used to go see him perform in London I was always re-amazed at how charismatic (oh, ok, sexy)he was on stage. I just like his face, his voice, his body, his songs, all of it really. Sounding like a sad housewife now.

If you like fish, Skippers in Leith is excellent as well as good value and the portions are HUGE! (If you're wearing your posh frock, then DON'T have the gambas, even though they are yummy!). The wine list is good and not over priced as well. It's perhaps not the most romantic of venues (more bistro in style), although it is cosy and the service is good!

The Witchery and Atrium are very expensive (I believe) although they do have very good reputations.

Tigger - I hope I'm not too late to add my vote to Janz's for Leith & its fish restaurants. The one I know best is The Waterfront. The last time I went there it wasn't that expensive, and portions were certainly good. Make sure you ask to sit in the conservatory.
Susanmt - do you mind me asking what year you graduated? And what was your favourite restaurant that closed down? When I was a student Chinese Home Cooking on Argyle Place was about as fancy as we got!

BTW when I went to the Queen's Garden Party 3 years ago we ate strawberry & cream cheese sandwiches, and the tea was terrible!
