If you don't have the same surname as your children, how do you sign letters to e.g. the school?

I kept my maiden name for professional and personal use. My e-mail is based on my maiden name. The children however have DH's surname and that's fine.
But I'm always at a loss as to how to sign off letters to authorities/ schools etc in which I am acting as their parent.

Given the surname is different I feel I need to explain?
e.g. I have just written a letter to DS1's new school - how would you sign off?:

Name MySurname
Parent

Name MySurname
Mother of XXXX

or what?

I really don't want to start using Mrs DH-Surname as it's then a slippery slope...

i sign the name with my name. not my mil'ss. that would be too weird.

what I do is always put

Re: DS1 surname

at the top of the letter and then sign it

Tommy Myname
(Mother)

i always sign with my name. though the school is quite good and sends letters addressed to me and not mrs whatever

jennifersofia · 11/04/2007 15:54

I always double barrel for these purposes eg. my first name my surname-dh's (and dd's) surname.

hitchcock · 11/04/2007 15:58

i am mrs smith when it comes to ds at playschool
however i am ms jones in real life . works for me except some one from ds playschool shouted out mrs smith once and i did not realise it was me she was shouting....

i care for children and most children have parents with different names nowadays for whatever reasons

i think once you have introduced yourself to your childs school as x then they normally generally remember

letters come home for children in my care addressed to the parents with their right names on, it shouldnt be a problem

fridayschild · 11/04/2007 21:31

I just use my own name; I usually manage to slip a sentence into the letter which makes it clear I am DS's mother, despite the completely different names

RustyBear · 11/04/2007 21:34

Don't forget though that most letters will end up in the office & may be seen by someone who doesn't know whose parent yuo are... so it doesn't hurt to add that information.

MorocconOil · 11/04/2007 21:37

Any letter I have written has meant I have named my children, then I just sign it with my name. It hasn't been a problem so far.

amidaiwish · 11/04/2007 22:14

i double-barrel too. just to avoid any confusion.

2cheekymonkeys · 11/04/2007 22:23

DP and I aren't married but i changed my name to avoid exactly this sort of confusion. I've always hated having a different surname to my DC.

islandofsodor · 12/04/2007 11:12

I have the same name but letters that I get for children with different names either start with Re: Child's name, (my preferred style) mention the child's name on the body of the letter or sign off with Ms XXX (y''s mother) at the end

I just sign with my own name. I figure that in this day and age school can surely cope with that.
