cyclists: up to what age did/would you use a bike seat?

Dd is 4 in July. She is a bit big for her current bike seat, which was given to us and goes on the back of dh's bike. We're going on holiday with my dad in May and would like to take our bikes, but I don't think dd will cope with the seat anymore! I have seen some in Halfords which look bigger than ours, and have a heavier weight limit, but I don't know if it's worth getting another one. She's too small for a trailer bike - I can't see her being able to ride one for another year at least, but you never know. DH often cycles to work and takes dd to nursery on route.

the ones that go on the bar between the handle bar and you seem good for this sort of size.

We have just bought a trailer (the kind they sit down in) for ds (4) who has outgrown his seat

we got it from eBay and plan to resell when it is no longer needed - I think he will be ready for a tagalong this year. Could your dd not have a go on a tagalong? She might be ok?

FrannyandZooey · 10/04/2007 10:12

God pesme I am not convinced

I don't think I would want a whopping great 4 y o in between me and the handlebars

paddingtonbear1 · 10/04/2007 10:15

Hi F&Z we did try her on one in a bike shop, but she couldn't reach the pedals even with the seat on lowest. Not sure I would trust her yet either as she still tends to start falling asleep in her seat (even though it's a bit small)!
I did see the trailers but they were expensive, maybe I will look on eBay!

I've seen the kind of seats you mention pesme, they look great but I think dd is too big - dh would probably come off the bike!

i suppose it depends how whopping youa re yourself! i am still hoping to prise dd (3) into her back bike seat but was considering the front thingy cos you can have wee chats en route.

My DS1 has been going on a trailer bike since he was 3, but he's leggy.

Alternatively, you can get a bar, that lets you use a regular kids bike as a trailer bike? That way the seat would absolutely be low enough?

I'd be nervous about the falling asleep thing, though! That's a problem on those tiny seats that go on the crossbar, too, though, tbh.

paddingtonbear1 · 10/04/2007 10:20

I don't have dd's seat on my bike as I'm quite small (only 5ft) and I didn't fancy it, thought I might come off. dh is ok with it. Does your ds like his trailer F&Z? Are they ok are on the roads, with traffic?
Not sure if we should just forget the bike until dd is big enough for a tag along, but we had a great time in the Lakes last year!

We got our trailer for about £60, plus they seem to resell well so we are hoping to get a good amount for it when we have finished

Dp says "BoBike" sell a good junior seat suitable for 4 - 7 year olds but I reckon it would be heavy on the back of the bike. This is why we went for the trailer.

NQC is really the person to ask - I'll point her here later if I see her

FrannyandZooey · 10/04/2007 10:21

Ah

I think I am posting a little slowly this morning

FrannyandZooey · 10/04/2007 10:22

Paddington he loves the trailer although I think he will grow out of it quite soon - he is tall for his age

I personally don't take it on the roads, no, but I don't cycle on roads anyway

paddingtonbear1 · 10/04/2007 10:33

The BoBike seats look interesting - I'd not heard of them before!
The heaviest weight limit I saw in Halfords was 48lbs. Dd is 38 currently so they might be ok, not sure how long for though.
Might have a closer look at the BoBike ones!
