Something awful happened to me on Good Friday, am only now able to talk about it.

The whole family was at my mum's for an Easter get together, and as it was so nice we ate out in the garden. All the adults were sat around the garden table chatting and the dc's who had finished eating were diddling about playing with the garden toys. All of a sudden, my sister shouted 'OMG, E (my dd2) is in the pond!!', my brother (who was nearest, dh and I were at the other end of the table) and tried to pull her out, it seemed to take him forever, as she was struggling against him apparently, and I was screaming 'Get her out, please get her out', eventually, he managed to yank her out and she was screaming her head off!!! I kind of went into autopilot, whipping off her clothes, drying her off, running her a bath to warm her up and get the yukky pond water off her. Then my mum came up to me, grabbed my arm and said 'Are you OK?' and I just crumbled. I couldn't stop sobbing. It was unbelievable that with 9 adults in the garden and only one small access point to the pond that she had got herself in that position. I keep going over all the awful 'what if' scenarios in my head and torturing myself, I know it is pointless, she is ok, but I can't help it!!

You poor thing Bomper. Glad to hear that she's ok though.

How frightening try not to think about it too much.

A month ago my three year old literally ran across a busy road - his hand just slipped from mine and he ran - I felt quite tearful about it for days afterwards. I suppose it's just the shock of thinking how near to real harm they came.

Carmenere · 09/04/2007 17:14

OMG Poor poor you. What a hideous shock. It happened to my dn when she was just 2, we had a stream/river in our garden and somehow she got out of the house and I saw her through the window. She was standing in the water up to her waist and it was freezing. Never been so scared in my life, she actually went blue when we got her out. Her dad is a doc so he knew what to do but my God it was terrifying so I feel for you.

Bomper · 09/04/2007 17:15

I am so angry with myself, I have been going on and on at my dad for ages to block that part of the pond off, but he was always coming back with 'I need to be able to get to the pond to maintain it', 'The dc's are hardly here often enough to justify it', 'Everyone will keep an eye on them'. Well, now we know it can happen with a garden full of adults - it's blocked off now, just a shame it had to take dd to fall in do it!!

Dd had violent diahorrea (sp?) about half an hour after the incident. Don't know if it was through gulping pond water or shock - poor mite!

Swizzler · 09/04/2007 17:19

God, that sounds awful. Glad your dad has now blocked off the pond now.

BalletMum · 09/04/2007 17:22

Poor you, it is so difficult to keep an eye on the children when there are so many adults. I have a large family who we spend time with. There are always lots of adults and we have two ds's. However I have realized that you just can not rely on the adults to keep an eye. Even my husband gets distracted - try not to be too hard on yourself. The good thing is that none of your children will ever go near a pond again

hunkermunker · 09/04/2007 17:23

god how shocking-glad she's alright.
Sometimes having loads of adults around makes everyone complacent and assume someone else is keeping an eye out for the little ones.We lost ds at the airport and there was 4 adults supposedly keeping an eye on him. That taught us all a lesson.

chocolateface · 09/04/2007 17:34

I agree, the more adults around, the more complacent we get.

Heathcliffscathy · 09/04/2007 17:50

terrifying.

they can get themselves into real danger soooo quickly....i'm so glad it was all ok.
