apart from aiming a shootgun at them every time they come near there's not a lot you can do. Our moggy does it all over the flower beds, not grass though..cats DON't like the smell of citrus, lemon, oranges..maybe you could put a cat scarer out...Betterware does things like this.

Try a product called Silent Roar - pellets soaked in lion urine and completely sterilised. It keeps cats out of my garden and even seems to keep out a muntjack deer. It doesn't show up on the ground so toddlers won't be picking it up. From some garden centres or online - cheaper at garden centres if you can find it.

Could plant some spinnies - those toys that move in the wind like windmills. Works for us - but watch out for cats finding other areas.

you could try spraying them with water when you can catch them,(not a water cannon type tho, resist that!)It won't hurt them but as most cats dislike water it should discourage them.I used it when my two were kits and found it v.successful

I bought a product called "Wash and Get off" (yes really ) Basically it does just what it says - you can clean affected bits with it - e.g path etc and then the smell of it keeps the cats from doing it in the same place again. HTH {smile]

You may also sprinkle pepper but I don't think is that effective.

If your new neighbour is nice maybe you could check that she provides them with a litter tray? It's not always that easy as not all cats will use them (we have two, one does one doesn't) Difficult to drop into conversation but maybe you could find a subtle way of doing it. "I love cats but not sure I could handle having to clear out a litter tray..." "Our old neighbours had cats but they didn't provide them with a litter tray, which is disgusting isn't it?"

bunnyrabbit · 19/07/2004 13:36

Why should they have a litter tray if they're allowed out? We never had litter trays for our cats once we had a cat flap.

MY MIL hates cats coming in her garden and has one of the contraptions that makes a sound outside of our hearing but well within the cats'. Scares the daylights out of them apparantly and they scoot through her garden at a great rate of knots without so much as stopping for a sniff.

errmm...to stop them pooing in other people's (eg Twiglett's) gardens? Maybe I'm unusual but I think it's pretty unsociable not to.

BlossomHill · 19/07/2004 20:09

According to my neighbour fill up empty bottles of coke, lemonade or whatever you have with water. Put a couple in your garden. The cats don't know what they are as they refelct and it puts them off. Another is orange peel all over the garden. Cats find orange peel repulsive. They are also child-friendly ideas too!!!
