Are you 'precious' about your toilet?

Ok, am I OTT or have I a right to be upset? We have a rather strange man (+dog) doing our garden at the moment. Today he asked to use the toilet and left it really dirty. The bathroom is the only room that gets a thorough cleaning regularly, I hate an unclean toilt and I cant get it out of my head that his cr@p has been left in there festering . I have thrown a bottle of bleach down and got dh to clean it but I still feel it has been contaminated and have considered buying a new seat.

Am I over-reacting? wise Mumsnetters?

I would be reallly p*d of, but would get Dh to clean it and put it out of my mind. How long is he doing the garden, coz you've let hm use it once - he is going to ask again and you can't really say "No your hygiene standards are not to my liking"

After he's gone - buy a new seat, but I wouldn't - I would Domestos it to within a inch of its like and forget about it

mummytosteven · 15/07/2004 18:44

I think it would be normal to be somewhat unhappy if someone left your toilet dirty, and normal to want to clean it - I think tho considering that the toilet is contaminated after being cleaned/bleached and considering buying a new seat sounds excessive. It is extremely unlikely, if downright impossible to catch any illness from a toilet, especially if it has been cleaned and bleached. The word "contaminated" that you used also sounds a little excessive - do you consider other objects in the house contaminated? Do you find yourself washing your hands more than normal?

SoupDragon · 15/07/2004 18:44

PMSL!!!

Do you feel the same way if guests use your toilet?

mummytosteven, perhaps I am a bit obsessive-compulsive, I do wash my hands alot! I suppose "contaminated" is quite a strong word but my bathroom is my sanctuary and he left it really dirty. Also, dont want to sound like Margot Ledbetter but he is quite a grubby character anyway. His dog pooed in the garden yesterday and I did turn a blind eye but thought that rather unpleasant too.

mummysurfer · 15/07/2004 18:49

what do you mean dirty -
was there skiddies in the pan
was there poo on the seat
or was it just garden muck

binkie · 15/07/2004 18:53

No you're not over-reacting - but it sounds as if you find the man creepy anyway so his toilet behaviour is a sort of focus for some more general skin-crawling on your part. If that's right, you're right to find him creepy, but don't take it out on your bathroom! (if that's not a weird thing to say).

Is the situation likely to arise again? If so, I think in this case it's got to be your dh, not you, who tells the man he's expected to clean up after himself.

mummytosteven · 15/07/2004 18:54

sorry to probe a sensitive area, but I was OCD about handwashing when PG (ended up on Prozac at 30 weeks PG) to help me through it, so just wanted to gently probe whether you might be going through the same thing, coz I would hate to think of anyone else going through what I went through without seeking help. If you feel the handwashing is affecting your daily life you can get help for it - behaviour therapy and/or SSRIS - tho you might have to do a bit of arm twisting to get them prescribed for you when PG. A little bit of extra caution when PG is understandable and probably reasonable. Just look at it this way - if this had happened to your best friend, would you a)expect her to get a new loo seat? b)if she hadn't, do you think she/anyone else would end up ill because of it?

If you want to contact me to discuss this further at all, i'm [email protected]

agy · 15/07/2004 19:00

Mummysurfer - have you read her first post! its very graphic about what was in there! No, I don't think you're over-reacting - I'd be just the same.

bunny2 · 15/07/2004 19:06

mummysurfer, loads of skiddies and a big half-melted poo it was vile.

I think binkie is right about the general creepiness, I made dh cancel him when dh was going to be out. I just felt uneasy being here on my own with him even if he stayed outside. Womens intuition.

mummytosteven, I understand what you are saying about OCD, I dont think it is a problem but yes I do wash my hands after putting on shoes (in case of dog muck), putting rubbish in the bin, going outside etc. I am just over-cautious as I've had 2 miscarraiges and am very keen to avoid toxoplasmosis.

Bleugh, bunny! Have to admit after seeing him with my own eyes, I wouldn't let him in any part of my house - just keep doing the bleaching thing.

(PS - am mortified about what happened by the fishpond ...... ds is very repentant ! )

mummytosteven · 15/07/2004 19:11

I hear you Bunny2 - that you are in a stressful situation at the moment. Please, though, if you ever do feel that the handwashing is getting out of control/stopping you enjoying your pg look for the right sort of help. Maybe it would help you to discuss your concerns about toxo with a sympathetic midwife/GP to get their input on appropriate precautions to take.

All the best with you and the lo.

agy · 15/07/2004 19:12

But on the other hand, I suppose if you want your garden done you aint gonna get Prince Charles to come and do it!

bunny2 · 15/07/2004 19:25

thanks mummytosteven . I'll remember that.

jodee, do you need your garden doing? .

Glad I'm not alone on this. Might see if the bleach has worked, Im dying for a pee.

Have instructed dh to inform the gardener our toilet is blocked and we are waiting for a plumber if he wants to go again.

charliecat · 15/07/2004 22:20

My mother goes and sniffs and has a go at anyone who may have used her loo for anything more than a wee, I wish I could show her herself LMAO!!!!!

bunny2 · 15/07/2004 22:23

Lol, that's me!! If we have guests and they are in the toilet for more than a couple of mins I find myself hissing to dh "they better not be doing a poo". He thinks I am a bit odd and I have to admit i probably am.

OP posts:
bran · 15/07/2004 22:40

pmsl bunny2, do you mind if I use your loo before I have an accident?

bunny2 · 15/07/2004 22:42
