but it is true that not many car insurance will take on a left hand drive?

That's not true, you may have to pay higher premiums, though.

It is a nightmare thing to do, register your car here. We brought ours here from Belgium. Make sure your Mum has a certificate of conformity from the manufacturer (even though it comes from an EU country and was registered there). It took us bloody months to get ours off the manufacturer. Then you have the catch 22 situation - to register the car, you have to have evidence of British insurance - no British insurer will insure a car which isn't registered here. There are one or two (we found one) and most will charge extortionately as they have a captive market. Oh and they will provide a cover note for you to register the car, but some insurers won't allow you to drive on the cover note (I kid you not). You also need to MOT the car - the certificate has to go to the DVLA along with evidence of ownership, cert of conformity, insurance, and doubtless one hundred other things. She will need to change her headlights too. Some people are told to change the speedo into miles (we weren't, thankfully, but it seems fairly random).

DON'T DO IT, IT'S NOT WORTH THE BLOODY HASSLE!

Oh, but once you've achieved all that, and have found somewhere to get your plates made up, you'e laughing.
