Agreed, My mum used to go there when Dad was drinking and she felt alone- they'd make her a coffee and listen to her. She said she wouldn't ;eave as one day he would change. They didnt criticise, everyone else did. Thought she was barmy to stay with him.

One day he changed and now he's fab.

Non-judgemental listening is a fab gift to give somebody.

misdee · 31/03/2007 17:30

agrewe, felt better the other day after calling them

Beetrootccio · 31/03/2007 17:30

agree Peachy - that is what they are there for.

Misdee and so glad you did.

tbh, talking to someone with real problems or worries is so much better than cranks and sex calls

You're in Somerset aren't you Beety? (Or am I worng? Probably)

Parents live in Somerset too, though not near you iirc.

Phone based listening esp. important in rural areas imo.

Beetrootccio · 31/03/2007 17:41

Yes I am.

TBH Sama are busy everywhere, not sure who has the most cranks.

We have anational number now so we get calls form all over.

Beetie, I worked for The Samaritains for a couple of years in South London. We got zillions of sex-calls!! It was a real eye-opener actually. But a fantastic service nevertheless, and definitely not just for the suicidal

lionheart · 31/03/2007 22:38

Sex calls to the Samaritans.

onehackedoffmuma · 01/04/2007 13:38

swaying slightly from the original subject matter - whilst at uni I used to work in customer services and as the number was freephone and operated 24 hours a day I too used to have people treating it as a sex line!!

My response would be 'I'm not paid enough to listen to this' and then proceed to put the phone down on them

oxocube · 01/04/2007 14:45

I used to say "this is a crisis line, not a sex line. Are you feeling suicidal?" which usually made them hang up

There was one guy though, who when I said "this isn't a sex line - there are other services for that" he asked "oh do you have their number then?"

Well a friend of mine (mother of 3) asked me to accompany her to have an abortion. Her dh didn't want her to keep the child and she was torn.

I accompanied her to the doctor and so on and we organised everything. I thought I was ok with it but I noticed the night before, I was in fact very, very upset so I called and they were great. It was good to be able to talk to someone about it.

In the end, she decided to keep the baby but sadly she miscarried.

Beetrootccio · 01/04/2007 20:16

there is a very strict way of handing over so that you realloy do leave the 'job' at the door.
