Oh my god - weevit emergency...

Just on our way to bed and go to feed the cat and there's tiny white moving crumbs all over the box. Aarrgghh! An hour later and we've emptied the whole cupboard, binned most things and wiped everywhere with disinfectant.

Any tips on how to get rid of them - don't even know if they are weevils - they're teeny tiny and white (and everywhere...). Do weevil-type things die if you spray washing stuff at them? They're in our DIY/cleaning cupboard thankfully, although we've had to throw all our paintbrushes and dusters away.

Feel very girly and just want to go to bed and let someone else sort it out...

They sound like flour mites - weevils are larger, a bit like small beetles with long snouts.
here

Ah yes - flour mites look likely. We're just mopping the floor - have stripped off and all clothes are in the wash and I'm off to have a shower... Feel unbelievably itchy!

I think You should stick with weevit, like the name!

BallsOfChocolate · 28/03/2007 23:08

Are you sure they are not maggots?

Boco · 28/03/2007 23:08

weevits sounds like they should be in the arts and crafts section.

Or maybe they're lentil weevils?

Dottydot · 28/03/2007 23:08

OH. MY GOD. Please don't say they're maggots. I don't think they are - they're almost microscopic - you can barely see them - only when they move. I think they're more likely to be flour mites (please god...).

Actually, is this the cat food box? Could be intestinal worm larvae..

MrsSpoon · 28/03/2007 23:10

Never had them but I believe these are the reasons why food stuffs should be decanted into plastic tupperware type containers. I would assume if the cupboards are clean and you make sure the food is in containers then they shouldn't come back.

BallsOfChocolate · 28/03/2007 23:10

You know, like kids get? Not nice, white, tiddly widdly and very wriggly?

Dottydot · 28/03/2007 23:10

Aarrggghhhh!!!! It was the cat food box and now I'm not going to be able to sleep. What the hell are intestinal worm larvae???

maggots >>shudder

BallsOfChocolate · 28/03/2007 23:11

Well, um, worms in the tummy that come out of their bums in the dark - sorry to be so graphic.

Dottydot · 28/03/2007 23:12

noooooooooooo.... definitely not those. I wouldn't allow it - not in my house....

Google roundworm+cat or worms+kids - it matters because they are very easily, quickly and painlessy treated with over the counter medicines (ie you could go and buy them and take it anyway just to make sure). If your children complain of sore bottoms it's a no-brainer.
