Anyone retrained later in life?

DH and I have decided not to have any more children (he's had the snip now) and I will be returning to work soon. I would like to train to do something else but it would mean having to re-do my science GCSE, then A levels and then uni. Is this even possible? I'm 28 so it's been a while since I studied anything. I would have to work in the mean time so would realistically study part time over a number of years. Has anyone else done this? I just don't want to end up stuck in office jobs all my life.

I've just applied to retrain and I'm 30. Planning on going back to Universiy when I'm 35. Never too late!

Deadsouls · 05/08/2017 17:26

I only just found and trained in what I want to do, started at 39, finished at 43

disneydatknee · 05/08/2017 17:32

Are you/did you study full or part time?

I'll be training on the job, part time. Once I have that qualification I'll do my university course also part time. I won't be fully qualified until I'm about 39.

OwnLittleIsland · 06/08/2017 08:08

I'm 38 and looking to retrain too. I feel I've left it scarily late :(

LazySusan11 · 06/08/2017 08:16

Almost 40 and thinking of retraining but I'm reticent because of my age and actually finding employment when I'm finished.

WomanWithAltitude · 06/08/2017 08:18

I'm retraining at the moment. Started at 35 and I'll qualify in my new field at 38. It's never too late!

WomanWithAltitude · 06/08/2017 08:18

I'm studying on the job (work based training contract), by the way.

juneau · 06/08/2017 08:20

I started a new PT degree course last year at the age of 42. I will finish when I'm 48 (giving me 20 years of work in my new area). You are definitely not too old at 28 to go back and start again with your education. We'll all be working until we're 70 so do the maths and you'll see how worthwhile it is to get into something you're interested in.

zippyswife · 06/08/2017 08:21

what are you all retraining in? I'm 40 looking to leave the police and want to retrain but can't work out what I want to do. 28 is young to retrain I think. You have a long time working so good to retrain and do something you think you'd enjoy. Good luck.

OwnLittleIsland · 06/08/2017 08:23

If love to hear what everyone retraining in for ideas!

I have a degree but no idea what I can do work wise that isn't minimum wage (or even for minimum wage!) or retrain to better job. I really feel I've fallen through the gaps

OwnLittleIsland · 06/08/2017 08:23

28 is an ideal time to work towards something new!

IrritatedUser1960 · 06/08/2017 08:27

28 is nothing. I went to uni to train for a career in podiatry at 45.
I flew through my BsC with top grades and now have a wonderful new career I love.
One of the people who trained with me was 60 and 10 years later is making a fortune in her private clinic.

weaselwords · 06/08/2017 08:30

I retrained as an occupational therapist at 29 and graduated at 33 as I did it part time while working. I didn't think of it as later in life!

I'm 50 now and considering doing the same again.

OwnLittleIsland · 06/08/2017 08:36

I'd love to train as an OT! It's 3 years full time and 30grand locally. I'd do it at under 30 though but couldn't afford it/justify it at 40!

isittimetogotobed · 06/08/2017 08:47

I retrained as a social worker at 35

NorfolksGiven · 06/08/2017 09:39

Im 40 this year and starting a Social Work MA in September. Will be qualified (hopefully!) in 2019 age 41 - eeek!

OwnLittleIsland · 06/08/2017 10:10

I've wondered about social work. The only one funded is children and families which I'm not sure if manage.

How has it been? What's it like?!

Gingernaut · 06/08/2017 10:13

I'm 49. I retire at 68 (so far).

I've got 19 years of working life to go.

I'm thinking about this too.

LazySusan11 · 06/08/2017 11:08

I'm interested in criminal law, am I too old at almost 40?

weaselwords · 06/08/2017 20:45

Do it @LazySusan11. Far better to regret doing something than not. And 40 is plenty of time to do this.
