at 6 it would be beavers.
normally attached to a church but not aleays and those which are often have leaders that are not churchy. iyswim

Don't know specifically about scouts, but the God bit is the same as it is in Guiding (am Guider), they take a promise and mention doing their duty to Him. All that means is that they are expected to go to Church Parade probably only once a month.

hippipotami · 25/03/2007 22:50

Ds (age 7) is at Beavers. He had to take some kind of pledge to do with God when invested. At the end of every session they say a Beaver prayer. Other than that, the reverend of our local church came in to talk to them and they do several church parades a year, but they are optional afaik. (DS has gone to all of them though...)

Obtaining the Faith badge is optional and we have opted out of that (not literally opted out, we just chose not to do it) for Beavers the badge involved writing and reciting a prayer.

We are non-religious but DS loves Beavers and the small religious part is acceptable to my mind as he gets so much out of the rest.

wpcanniecartwright · 25/03/2007 22:51

mine has never been on a church parade, been going for 4 years

unknownrebelbang · 25/03/2007 22:55

Our Beaver's section (not attached to a church) are invited to attend the St George's Day Parade, and the Remembrance Day Parade.

Beaver promise:

I promise to do my best
To be kind and helpful
And to love God.

Beaver prayer:

"Dear Lord, help me to be a good Beaver, always busy and bright. Be with those dear to me, and help me do things right."

TooTicky · 25/03/2007 22:57

My ds1 goes to Beavers and loves it. God doesn't really seem to enter into it.

hippipotami · 25/03/2007 22:58

Thats the one unknownrebellgang!! It is actually a cute prayer isn't it...

It really is only a smallish part of Beavers..

EllieK · 25/03/2007 23:01

I was a beaver scout leader for many years, we only took them to rememberance day parade and St Georges day, they didn't have to come and many were felt too young to sit thro the service so just joined us marching!

didn't do the prayer, just the promise

maybe go along to a local group for a visit and see how chrchy it is before deciding?

princesscc · 25/03/2007 23:04

St George is the patron Saint of Scouting, so they are always involved in that one

Marina · 25/03/2007 23:07

They do vary.
Ds' Beavers is not very churchy but they do make a religious promise and they do attend church parade a few times a year. He loves it.
Compare with Brownies and Rainbows which is attached to our church, run by (very nice and welcoming) active churchgoers and have full parade every month.
So I'd check your local ones carefully - you might have a choice.
