Tell me I am right about this. Council housing!

My MIL has been offered a bungalow which is great for her as she really need it and I am happy for her, but my BIL and his wife still live at home with MIL. Now the bungalow is a 2 bed, so the council have said that BIL and wife can move in with MIL.
Anyway BIL and wife are not impressed and think that if they go to the council and kick up enough fuss that the council will house them, even though they only have 6 points. He said that the council have no right to move them from a large room to somewhere with a small room, with not enough space for all their stuff. I have tried to explain that the council have no need to house them, as they have no children and can afford to private rent, but of course BIL knows everything....
Me and SIL looked at private renting the other day and they could afford a studio apartment, and I know that if she had a baby at some point that the council will house them later now. But I KNOW that the council will not house them now.

misdee · 25/03/2007 16:36

yes u can as he has v strong local connection with the area.

SparklyGothKat · 25/03/2007 16:39

That was the only thing I wasn't sure about lol. I know a lot about council housing but didn;t know that

Why do some people just think they are entitled to council housing?

Winds me up big time.

Do they both work?

SparklyGothKat · 25/03/2007 16:41

yep, both work full time. They can't afford to buy a house, fair enough, its very expensive round here, even for a flat or bedsit. But they can afford to private rent

Blossomhill · 25/03/2007 16:43

IMO council is for really needy people and that's that.

SparklyGothKat · 25/03/2007 16:45

yep, I know that. They both work. He said they can't afford to private rent as they have £4000 debt. (i wish I only had £4000 debt!!) but they can wanker money on crap every week.

he drives me mad!! I wish he would move to SA and get out of our life.....

OP posts:
hippipotami · 25/03/2007 17:11

So he is not really needy then, just wasteful and crap with money. Let him live on the streets for a few weeks, he will soon start to be frugal and save the pennies to pay the rent/mortgage like most people.

I get so hacked off that people who CAN but WON'T pay their own way think they can just get a council house!!

Tortington · 25/03/2007 17:20

as long as they can pay the rent - their earning have nothing to do with it as long as they have a housing need.

and fro your description i dont think they have a housing need.

either that or your MIL may be asked to move to a smaller place

SparklyGothKat · 25/03/2007 18:50

She is getting a 2 bed bungalow, which will be big enough for her and her DH, but BIL and wife have no need to actually move in with them. I know that the council could have said 'well actually you only need a 1 bed, so tell your son to go and grow up and rent somewhere' but the council are being ok about it.

So if he's not tight with money given the £4k spending, is it all just procrastinating because he doesn't want to move out of mummy's?

ScoobyDooooo · 25/03/2007 20:07

Ha ha if only it was that bloody easy, we have 2 kids & have been living in a room about 12ft by 12ft for the past 7 months the council dont give a shit think your BIL needs to wake up.

SparklyGothKat · 25/03/2007 20:52

they just don't want to pay out money for bills and foods, on top of rent. I know your situation Scooby, and I know how hard it is to be housed. Did you decide not to take the masionatte? (sp??) or did you not get the offer?
BIL needs to grow up, I know that. DH is so annoyed with him and wifey. He said that he would never have married me, until we had a place of our own. Like I said, we were very very lucky, as we went on the list at 17, not expecting to be housed for many many years, we were looking at private renting, when the housing officer came to see me and assess my parents home. What I didn;t realise at the time that as we were overcrowded and I was sleeping in the living room, was I was getting 50 points a years, when we were offered the flat we had 104 points, which is more than enough for a flat. BIL and wife have 6 points!!!! thats its, and the housing officer told MIL that they are in no position to be housed for many years.

He is a stupid man. He thinks the world owes him everything. He is also a lazy sod!
I would let him get on with it, he will soon find out the truth. Just dont let him talk MIL out of new place!

Lisa

ScoobyDooooo · 25/03/2007 21:05

No did not win it could not believe it to be honest, as there was so few bids on it, it made me realise it was going to be at last another year before we are housed!

Hopefully moving into a private rented apartment middle of may though just getting things started now, it will only be temp until we are housed by the council.

SparklyGothKat · 25/03/2007 21:13

He reckons that he is going with MIL and FIL to view the bungalow tomorrow, FIL has said he can go jump, because he will start on about how small this is, and how that isn't suitable, and as the OT and housing officer will be there, FIL doesn't want any trouble. Me and DH are allow to go and view it as we are all excited and won't try and talk her out of it (we have no motive to)
Scooby, I really thought you were in with a chance with it, guuted for you.
Hope the apartment is ok for you. At least you will have space eh? Good luck and I hope you get something really soon, you deserve it

SparklyGothKat · 26/03/2007 15:57

well, MIL went to see the bungalow and its beautiful. BIL and wife have also phoned up a private rented bedsit and are viewing it tonight. So they will be out of her hair finally

OP posts:
SparklyGothKat · 26/03/2007 21:36

haven't heard from BIL about the bedsit... hopefully they took it

OP posts:
SparklyGothKat · 29/03/2007 21:27
