I wanted some advice really from people who live in southwest cornwall area.
We are looking to move down there but it will be a very big change for us!
Has anyone made a big move there, what is it like to live there?
Where is the nicest places to be living and where is all the work?
Looking forward to hearing from anyone.

Dreams, if you want any info on the local are just ask. I moved here from Surrey about 19 years ago

wobblyknicks · 13/07/2004 20:40

dreams - sorry if I've put you off but obviously there's no point hiding the truth!!! Local agents reckon the house prices will definitely keep going up over the next couple of years so don't pin your hopes on them going down too soon. The problem is that there is literally no more building space down here - unless they start building in the sea, so demand is easily outstripping supply and thats pushing the prices through the roof atm. The local papers came out this morning and I don't need the property supplements so if you want to email me with your addy I can send them to you and give you an idea of exactly how bad it is down here!!!

Sorry for putting you off, but its harder than it looks to live down here.

Dreams · 13/07/2004 21:15

wobblyknicks · 13/07/2004 21:19

Anyway, if you do move down here you can't tell anyone - I don't want to lose my title as "Only Mumsnetter in Cornwall" lol

Dreams · 13/07/2004 21:20

I mean't to say where abouts in Dorset are you from Delgirl!?

OP posts:
Dreams · 13/07/2004 21:21

lol wobblyknicks don't worry you can hold your title for another year !

OP posts:
wobblyknicks · 13/07/2004 21:23

thanks dreams - although its rather a sad title to hold - I'm not sure I want it!! Thinking of moving some time in the next year or so, so it will be up for grabs amyway!!

Dreams · 13/07/2004 21:27

I have emailed you wobblyknicks.

Thanks again.

wobblyknicks · 13/07/2004 21:28

Ok, sometimes it takes a while to get through but should get your email by tomorrow so will put them in the post then. Judging by normal Cornish post you should have the property pages by 2008 - ok?

DelGirl · 13/07/2004 21:30

Dreams: I live in Bournemouth, though have moved around the area quite a bit in my nannying days! Including a 2 year spell in Truro, but that was back in '87/89!

Dreams · 13/07/2004 21:30

ermmmm by that time i think i may have changed my mind.....Also maybe house prices will have gone even more sky high by then!!

So not only is the quality of life more slow and chilled by so are the postman!!!

OP posts:
wobblyknicks · 13/07/2004 21:32

EVERYTHING is slower!!! I'll try and get it to you by next week though!!!

Dreams · 13/07/2004 21:58

I was about to say that Beety lived in SOmerset then got to her post. I do not live in Cornwall - I live in Devon! Only just though we're in Plymouth.

Wages are low, property prices in Plymouth have rocketed in the last 2 years- luckily we moved here 2 years ago. Still cheaper than Exeter though. We moved back here to be nearer my parents - needed their help- and also to be nearer the sea and Dartmoor. DH is from N Ireland originally. Neither of us regret the move - there are disadvantages but I think the advantages outweigh them. IN 5 years time Plymouth will robably be quite a decent place to live. it's beng seriously re-vamped (long overdue).

Dreams · 13/07/2004 22:18

where did you move from jimjams was it far?

OP posts:
Jimjams · 13/07/2004 22:22

I've lived all over the place. Since getting married/having children we'd been in Bromley in London.

Dreams - sorry I've been off for ages. I was the one at the beginning who nearly moved to Truro but opted out. Most of the reasons why have been put into words very well by wobblyknicks really. DH had an interview at Truro hospital, but found out that there was quite a lot of politics going on there as well as in Penzance, so the job wasn't 100% to start with. We loved the idea of moving to the sea as we're both from the coast (East) originally and miss the sea here in the Midlands terribly. The more that we found out about the cost of living (house prices)... and education (crapish unless in Truro or private) ...and the house construction types... and the lack of Sainsbury's (loads of Tescos)... and the HUGE distance involved for us to keep in contact with family and friends...we got thinking! Yes, summer would be lovely there but sharing it with millions of others may be the problem and living with all that traffic would drive me bananas. We decided to stay where we are for now but are still thinking about that 'ideal' place...HTH??

wobblyknicks · 13/07/2004 23:26

Thanks poppyseed You reminded me of something else for dreams too - DO NOT buy a property marked as MUNDIC. Its made of old stone, often from local quarries, and has a very high risk of crumbling. Any decent surveyor or mortgage company would run a mile from a MUNDIC property. Just to warn you!!

dreams - do you mind me asking if you have kids and how old? Truro is definitely the only good place to send kids to school IMO. Also the distance thing is definitely a huge downside. Plymouth is about an hour and a half drive away and that is relatively near!!!!

ps - Truro has a Sainsburys now, don't know if that tempts you back!!

Dreams · 14/07/2004 11:09

Hi wobbly knicks I have a son who is nearly 2. I would want good education for him so the schools thing has put me off quite a bit! And also eventually i would like another baby and i cant be doing with crap care! I am bad enough as it is giving birth so i need top care!

Yes the idea of living by the sea is fab but also i loved the area think its very pretty in some parts.

I suppose we need to sit down and have a good think about the pro's and con's and weigh them both up.

We also need for my dp to work and it does not sound like there is a lot around there that he is trained in!

OP posts:
wobblyknicks · 14/07/2004 11:52

dreams - if you really want to move down here I think you can make it work but by the sounds of it the only sensible places for you to move would be Truro or Falmouth, or Redruth (only 30 mins drive from Truro and Falmouth). The main school in Truro is excellent, its just all the other schools that are bad!!! Nurseries around Truro and Falmouth seem good on the whole, have just been looking into them for my own dd, so I wouldn't worry there. And looking forward to the distant future, there is a very good college in Truro and the university of cornwall is currently being set up so by the time your son is old enough, he won't be forced to go miles out of the county for a decent uni.

Do you mind me asking what sort of work your dp would be looking for, then I can give you a slightly better idea of whats available.

Truro isn't very 'pretty' because its the business part of Cornwall but Falmouth is gorgeous and its only 30 mins from Truro, and that only goes up to about 50 mins in rush hour so its not too bad a commute. There's also a very good train service between Falmouth and Truro if you don't drive/don't want to drive.

The local health system is very sympathetic if you want to have a homebirth but if I was having another baby I would honestly move to Plymouth for a couple of months just to be able to avoid the hospital down here. I did have a fairly unusual experience because I had to stay in for 2 weeks because dd had jaundice and strep B but I've spoken to loads of people who've had babies there and had a terrible time, and there's been a few articles in the paper about bad birth experiences there. Saying that, they have an excellent SCBU unit there if there's anything drastically wrong - its just the main maternity ward that's rubbish. Its not 3rd world standard or anything but you have to know exactly what's what because they literally do not know their arses from their elbows.

Not trying to scare you off - on the whole Cornwall is a very nice place to live and day-to-day life isn't THAT bad, you just have to be very organised to cope with it!!

Hello
I am looking for help from Mums who live in and around the area we are moving to - near Lostwithiel in Cornwall.
We have just found out that we are moving in May and I need to get my son down for a primary school asap. He wil be joining school age 4 in September 2009 so I have missed the first round of applications and need to put in a late entry.
Can anyone recommend a primary school in or around that area?
Would really appreciate your help.
Thanks
