Hot tap in the kitchen doesn't turn very far and no water. Cold tap doesn't turn as far as it used to either.

Limnescale?

Eddas · 23/03/2007 16:20

Dh works in a plumbing centre so i'll ask him when he gets home (should be soon)

TooTicky · 23/03/2007 16:38

Thanks
I don't think it's limescale as it hasn't been that gradual.
Still nothing from the hot tap (only turns 180 degrees) and the middle of the tap is lower than usual - or the outside is higher, and sharp on the top! Cold tap is reluctant, like low pressure.

We've just had a plumber out to fix bath taps with this problem. I was only half listening as he told me what the problem was, but I think it was something to do with them coming off their spindle (whatever that means).

Whatever the problem was he solved it very quickly and only charged me £30.

He was a little longer than i thought!!!!

Apparently you need new glands!!!!

Ok, according to dh, who should know!! Shut the water off to the taps, usually valves underneath the sink. Then take the tap heads off, normally held on through a screw in the top. Then unwind the glands from the tap body and take them to a plumbers merchant to ask for new ones. He reckons about £5 for each one.

Simple!!!

TooTicky · 25/03/2007 22:21

Oh bugger. See, we can't actually shut the water off (problems with the one under the sink and the one outside is in buried in a hole in the ground, and anyway last time we had a plumber he broke it!). (Rented property, absent-minded landlord, mutter mutter). Okay. Thanks. Dp did fiddle with it a bit and I am currently working the hot tap with a spanner. The cold tap is getting more reluctant. So must find a way of shutting off water, preferably without having to use the one for the whole row of cottages. And then off to buy some new glands Thanks again

sounds like fun!!!

If it's a rented property get the landlord out or call a plumber, he'll have to pay won't he? Saves you the trouble then

Waiting for the landlord to do things is PAINFUL. Usually involves him trying to fix it himself, then bringing a friend round, then a few weeks later calling out a pro. (Front gate and fence have been waiting over 4 years...)
