which would you give up?

Now that you have said he is good at French I would be more reluctant to give it up.

It sounds like the football is more about boy bonding than an activity that he enjoys. My friend's DS (also DS's friend) is like this - desperate to enjoy football, likes wearing a shirt, wants a football duvet cover, but when it comes down to it would much prefer to be riding a bike or whatever than playing football. DS OTOH is obsessed - was made up when his reading book last night was about football. So I would be inclined to give that up and just ensure he gets enough other exercise - not really difficult, especially in summer. You could always send him to one of those one day soccer school type things in the holidays.

bozza · 22/03/2007 15:50

That is assuming he is a reasonably confident, sociable boy who does not need the boy bonding football thing.

tortoiseSHELL · 22/03/2007 15:50

6 is quite young for the piano I think - I've had one or two 5-6 year olds, and, although it does depend on hand size, they do find it difficult. The 7-8 year olds tend to fly, so maybe you could start the piano in a year or so. I would definitely keep the football, and if he enjoys the french then it seems a shame to drop it.

JodieG1 · 22/03/2007 15:53

I'd drop french as the football is good exercise and piano is a lovely instrument to learn and is great for concentration and musicality, I'm biased though as I learnt the piano as a child.

Hulababy · 22/03/2007 15:59

Based on what you have said I'd leave him in French and Football for now, and leave the music until he is a bit older

Twiglett · 22/03/2007 15:59

I know he WANTS to learn guitar .. we've never discussed piano .. but I haven't managed to sort out a guitar teacher and have found a keyboard class

he is at the moment quite sociable and has a range of friends thankfully

football and french both at school so just pick him up later .. piano would be elsewhere

I always promised I wouldn't move my kids from one activity to another but they come up and I can't help thinking oh how lovely to have the opportunity .. I can see how peole get stuck being taxi drivers

to the musicians / music teachers ... its not PIANO though .. its KEYBOARD with headphones ... does that change your opinion

Ds wants to learn guitar, but I can't be bothered to find a teacher just yet. I need to find him a football class really because they don't do it at school until Y3 and he is so keen.

tortoiseSHELL · 22/03/2007 16:05

yep, would definitely do the football and french

Good move

MerryMarigold · 22/03/2007 16:15

Respect you only wanting him to do 2 Twiglett. Am surprised school don't offer keyboard lessons during school - would this happen when he is in juniors? my mum is a music teacher so we are all for music in our family. but yes, i would leave the music till later - they do need to practise otherwise it is a bit pointless and you don't want to go buying a keyboard if he's not fully committed to it and really WANTING it. I'm sure more opp's for music will arise either in or out of school.

CAM · 22/03/2007 16:20

I think the poor girls' brain is completely fried by now

fannyannie · 22/03/2007 16:21

I'd give up the French (haven't read the rest of the thread)

babywhiting · 22/03/2007 16:24

my dd does french and football she loves them both!!! keep them all

JodieG1 · 22/03/2007 16:37

Hmm keyboard isn't as good as piano imo and I wouldn't do it, try guitar when you can find a teacher instead.

portonovo · 23/03/2007 11:01

It sounds like he's happy with the 2 clubs he's got, and it's you who is considering the keyboard.

I'd stick with the current ones and let the keyboard/music thing arise later if and when it does.

My approach was to have the children doing as few clubs as possible while young, because they naturally pick up more as they get older - particularly at secondary school age!

portonovo · 23/03/2007 11:10

Just to clarify, I wasn't suggesting you were trying to force him to do keyboard.

Just that if he's happy with his 2 clubs and isn't begging for keyboard lessons, why complicate your life until you need to!

Plenty of time for that!

dmo · 23/03/2007 13:09

i would keep the 2 clubs he is on now and leave keyboard till later
my son plays the guitar only really intreasted when he turned 10 but is now very good (he is 11 in june) he owns 2 guitars but it does help that his daddy plays

kookaburra · 23/03/2007 13:20

With our DS we had a choice between science club (which he loved!) and Footabll club ( which he was desperate to do!) Both at same time, so forced to choose. Gave him the choive, mentally willing him to do football, becuase although personnally I find science vastly more interesting than football, and it is very incovenient to get the kit ready etc he was 6 like yours and I think the physical exercise and interaction with others in more important at that age.
On the French thing - i have a degree in French, but did not start learning till I was 8, and that was never a handicap - I was eager for DC to learn as early as poss, so they did from the age of 3, and by the age of 8 when my eldest still couldn't ask for an ice cream in French, I admitted defeat, decided it was a waste of his time & my money and they can learn languages later - if they ahve the inclination...!
