Does a bottle of wine a day make you an alcoholic?

I am not particularly worried but notice that dp drinks a bottle of wine almost every night, usually between 6pm and 11pm. He doesn't seem horribly drunk at all but I was just wondering whether this is normal or has an effect on his health... Oh and on weekends he starts earlier, usually at lunch time.
Just interested in your views on this. TIA.

It will definately be affecting his health.

The "is he an alcoholic" thing is probably only really answered by whether or not he can (and will) stop.

Does he ever have any days when he doesn't drink? How long has he drunk this much? And at the weekend, if he starts earlier, does he drink more by the end of the day?

Kraut · 21/03/2007 12:13

He has hardly any days that he doesn't drink. Only if he (like now) is really sick. He has done this for a while but since he stopped smoking last August his alcohol intake has increased.
He might drink slightly more over the weekend but as I said he rarely seems pissed.

Hmmm ... Not seeming pissed isn't really a good sign. So, prior to August how much was he drinking daily and for how long?

Kraut · 21/03/2007 12:19

Before August he also sometimes might have had a bottle but sometimes maybe only half to two thirds.

it is not the amount you drink that makes you an alcholic, it is your dependancy on what you drink that does.. my mate at work was an alcholic even though he only drank once a week (to excess) but he could not modify this behaviour and reduce his consumption to be the same amount just over the week -- his doctor had him defined as alchoholic as he was so reliant on this drinking style..

He did give up but it was very hard as he felt that as he did not drink on several days a week he was OK -- the denial was the hardest bit to cope with...

I would say it sounds like there is a problem ...

Anna8888 · 21/03/2007 12:23

That's definitely too much wine. Why don't you make an appointment with your GP (just you) to discuss how you might tackle this with your husband?

expatinscotland · 21/03/2007 12:23

Yes

Kraut · 21/03/2007 12:26

Yes will have to do something about this! I thought this anyway but glad you agree with me as he says there is no problem...

No but he could be.Being an alcoholic is more about the compulsion to drink and the effect it is having on your life and relationships. The volume is not the issue

deaconblue · 21/03/2007 12:46

I would be concerned if dh drank this much. What did he put on his life insurance form, bet it wasn't 49 units a week rather than the recommended 14 for a man? If you drink that much that often you probably wouldn't seem pissed as I think your tolerance would go up

mediterraneo · 21/03/2007 13:55

My brother drinks half a bottle every day. He says he is under the limit, it seems like a lot to me. How many units in half a bottle of wine?

deaconblue · 21/03/2007 14:10

I think there's 7 glasses in a bottle (normal pub measures) and I think there's one unit in each glass

Tutter · 21/03/2007 14:11

what noddy said

Tutter · 21/03/2007 14:11

5 glasses per bottle, btw

janinlondon · 21/03/2007 14:16

A 750ml bottle of wine at normal strength is nine units.

bozza · 21/03/2007 14:20

Ok he might not be an alcoholic re compulsion to drink etc but he is definitely drinking much more than is healthy so could well be damaging his liver.
