I'm getting really peed off with the computer sceptically underlining my words in red.

The village where we live, FGS, of course I know how to spell it! Names of counties. Any word that I dare to spell the English way rather than the American way.

You can turn all that off, or alter it. I just can't recall how - tools somewhere?

KathyMCMLXXII · 20/03/2007 14:23

And you can teach it things like the name of your village - can't remember exactly how but 'add to dictionary' comes into it somehow, I think.

You should hear me when it starts underlining things in green. The grammar checks on computers must be the most pointless things ever. I warn all my students never to use them on pain of death.

AnnabelCaramel · 20/03/2007 14:25

I used to have to write to a Mrs Knowles and it always changed it to know-all.
Now that was both funny AND perceptive.....

SoupDragon · 20/03/2007 14:25

You need to change the language to "UK - English" for starters.

SoupDragon · 20/03/2007 14:26

If you right click on the red lined word, "add" is usually one of the options.

PeachyClair · 20/03/2007 14:27

ha! You should try writing an essay on Jainism or Hinduism- starts to look like a bizarre code where you just read the underlined words.

fannyannie · 20/03/2007 14:28

I'm having fun with that at the moment - doing a catalogue of sheet music to go onto ebay.......of course it doesnt' like most of the composers and titles of music LOL.

KathyMCMLXXII · 20/03/2007 14:28

Nooooo Slayerette, I adore grammar checkers. They're a fantastic way to shortcut the proofreading process as they pick up where you have made common errors like repeating or leaving out a word or 'to' instead of 'too' etc.
Between them the spelling and grammar checkers on MSWord enabled me to hand in an 80 000 word PhD with only 10 typos, which is pretty damn good going.

TooTicky · 20/03/2007 14:28

It won't let me click on an underlined word. And I don't know how to access its workings. It started when Mozilla Firefox re-installed itself.

TooTicky · 20/03/2007 14:30

Oh, right click!

You can change the language to British English for any document if you following the following steps:

Ctrl + A (selects your whole document)
Click on tools
Click on language
Click on set language
scroll down to English U.K.
Click ok

There may also be an option in the last box to 'detect language automatically' - that may also be quite useful.

Ooh thanks

OrmIrian · 22/03/2007 13:11

I always switch it of. I can do without some poxy paperclip metaphorically raising it's eyebrows at me

TooTicky · 23/03/2007 12:11

I don't even know how to switch it off.

OP posts:
ejt1764 · 23/03/2007 12:15

to switch off spell check, do the steps I said before - but, when you get to the 'set language' box, click on the 'do not set spelling or grammar box'

again, can't remember how to change the default - am off now, but wil have a look for you later.
