Bloody washing machine......Can i still use it ????

I went to get the washing out of the machine and realised that there was still water in it.
I tried several times to get it to drain the water but it kept on making a terrible noise (like metal clanking around).
It did eventually drain the water, so i put it on to spin and had to turn it off after a while cos it was making such an awful noise.

Have discovered 2 holes in the grey rubber thingy.
Can i still use it ???? Can it be fixed do you think ??
Or do i need to buy another ??????

What an exciting mumsnetter I am- Kitchen Bins/Washing machines and toilet cisterns!!!!!

i hade the same prob minus the holes and the waste pipe was badly blocked dp fixed it and it worked perfectly after that xxxxx

  1. there might be some lost item(s) in between the metal drum and the body of the machine - coins, cards, small toy, socks etc
  2. there might be a problem with the draining system: the hose has a blockage (pet hair, small clothing item, etc), in which case you can check the hoes by disconecting it from the drain pipe and filling it with your hands 3)if the machine has a small 'door' at the bottom to check for overflowing water, that might be blocked and you should be able to check.
  3. look in yellow pages for a local home apliances repairman , ask if they charge anything just for having a look at it and giving you a quote and see what they say. 5)hth! v. annoying not having a working washing machine. i hope you won't need to get a new one, but usually reapairing is not as cost effective as buying a new one . good luck!

Hi Nutcracker, not sure if it's this but before we replaced our machine it did this approximately every year, as things got stuck in there (bra wires etc) what it was was the pump was unable to function properly as something was stuck in it and the clanking noise was this thing in it. As a result the water was not removed because the pump couldn't pump it out......

To relieve this temporarily, we pulled the wm out from it's space, pulled out the water pipe that was attached to the draining bit and put it on the floor (with a bucket next to it) the water then came out very quickly....BE WARNED if it is this you may need a couple of buckets or else you might flood your kitchen.....it would need a new pump if this was the case (are you under warranty or have insurance of some kind) I think it cost us about £80 including call out charge, pump and fitting....hope you get it sorted soon lavxxx

hi, nutty, yes, try draining pump. Ours is Bosch and has small pipe at bottom to drain water - takes ages and makes a mess (keep towel on floor under pipe) but when empty you can unscrew pump thingy and extract eg 5p/hairgrip/bra wire that has stopped thing turning.

Ours did this a couple of weeks ago and did make horrible noise first. Is fine now. Good luck!

Thanks guys.
Am thinking i may just buy a new one. It is very old and is second hand to us anyway.
Plus it doesn't fit properly in the new kitchen (cupboard door and drawer won't open unless it's at an angle).

Will have a look around and see how mcuh it will be.

Do you reckon 200 quid would be enough ??

Oh and why is it that when the washer is broken the kids get a sickness bug

how big is the space you want to put it in, nutty? There are a few washers which are 55cm wide instead of 60cm but I don't think they'll be the cheapest.

Bad luck about the tummy bug

agy · 10/07/2004 15:57

Yes, could be the drain thingy at the bottom clogged up but wonder if it would make it make that noise? Usually just stops the water running away - and it overflows (IME!) If you do get a new one I'd say go for the best you can afford - think the lower priced ones do go wrong easily. And very high spin ones (1500) can vibrate the machine and loosen the concrete block thing under the drum and then you have to have the man out to fix it.

nutcracker · 10/07/2004 15:59

It's the depth thats the prob Jan. It's 60 deep and so is the gap but there are two small pipes running along the back of the wall and the plug socket.

Have checked and most of the new ones are only about 54/55 deep, which should be fine (i hope).

Janh,
I did my filter for the first time in 3 years (also Bosch). It is screwed back together and plug is in the tube but now it leaks every time I use it - is there a trick to getting the pump cover back on its thread securely ?

Sorry to hijack but I'm fed up with mopping puddles ! Nutty it may just be something caught in the seal. Our rubber bit has holes in it anyway is yours torn ? Unfortunate timing for you. Do you have a manual for it or could you download from Internet ?

nutcracker · 10/07/2004 16:13

Was wondering about the spin thingy. Is 1000 o.k or do i need higher ??

LIZS, mine leaked the last time I had to do it - I opened it up again and then screwed it back a bit harder or something, anyway it stopped - there is a rubber seal and maybe it was slightly out of line? Try that anyway.

agy, mine does make that terrible metal clanking when there is something in the filter/pump thingy - sounds like the end of the world and then eventually it just stops draining completely - sits there humming at me.

nutty, 1000 spins pretty dry and I'm not 100% convinced that a really fast spin makes that much difference, although it does a bit of course, but mine spins at 600 or 1200 and the washing isn't that much damper after a slow spin. So I would be quite happy with 1000 meself.
