Smug fruit shoot feeders - don't you ever worry about 20 years down the line?

Lots of people here talk about feeding their dcs crap food as a badge of honour - it's a weird kind of street cred.

"My kinds eat junk food - so shoot me, ha ha"
[subtext: I am a laid-back cool person and people who fuss about junk food are so up their own bums it's unbelievable]

But.... there's a big worry out there about obesity, about additives in food, about the way bad eating habits often have their beginnings in childhood...... and the concerns are likely to get stronger with time.

Don't you ever worry that 20 years from now when times have moved on, one of your dcs will read your light hearted comments and actually feel a bit that you seemed so proud of feeding them crap?

Whereas what I'd hope for with mine is to be able to say, "Well, you did sometimes eat rubbish at parties and I wasn't all that happy about it, but I let you because I didn't want you to feel left out. I didn't stress about it too much because I knew you ate well the rest of the time."

[subtext: I was never a perfect parent but I did my best to find the balance between feeding you well and not being obsessional about food].

That's it fortyplus, bring up formula

That's really going to settle the thread down!!!

Spidermama · 18/03/2007 22:17

Countto10 I'm also worried about this idea that our kids will read this. God is there no privacy. Why can't all threads just quietly fade away with the fullness of time? Why does the internet have to store so much.

Mind you I can't imagine kids actually wanting to spy on their parents retrospectively. Would you be trying to find out about what your parents posted when you were a nipper if the technology were available? I know I wouldn't.

nulnulcat · 18/03/2007 22:17

if most of our kids read this then childline would be inundated!! abuse of some kind all over the place!

in my case drunk while breast feeding! dropping her on numerous occasions sausage rolls fruit shoots dummies! what a crap mum i am! and i got tatoos piercings chav tendencies taken drugs lots of alcohol smoked and worst of all had really dodgy fashion sense in the 80's!

fortyplus · 18/03/2007 22:18

Sorry... couldn't help myself... obviously had too many additives as a child

LilyLoo · 18/03/2007 22:18

LOL is this set up to be most contraversial thread !

welliemum · 18/03/2007 22:18

soapbox and blu about processing. Shows how little I know, but of course, the multinationals aren't about to close down and take up knitting instead. Eek.

Really! I would be fascinated to know!

I'd be searching like mad if I thought I could find out what they were thinking!

WelshBoris · 18/03/2007 22:19

OI TATTOOS ARE NOT CHAVVY.

Boris is feeling very sensitive about this subject at the moment

nulnulcat · 18/03/2007 22:19

fortyplus · 18/03/2007 22:20

WB - seriously... I bf both mine and avoid junk food most of the time, but I can't bear the holier-than-thou attitude that so many people on mn seem so proud of.

How's the donkey, by the way?

welliemum · 18/03/2007 22:20

I dunno, I'd have been fascinated to read what my parents said about parenting at the time.

Instead of the rather rosy picture they paint now, hello trees, hello flowers, you were lovely children

Breastfeeding and mainlining fruitshoots into their veins kind of defeats the object

lionheart · 18/03/2007 22:21

Have you just been tattooed, WB?

nulnulcat · 18/03/2007 22:21

but wb it has long been agreed that i am the mumsnet queen of chav!! and i got my tattoos which i had long before i developed my chaviness!

fortyplus · 18/03/2007 22:21

nulnulcat - what a great idea! Newborn slurping at a Fruit Shoot bottle - that'd stir 'em up!

WelshBoris · 18/03/2007 22:22

Very good thanks fortyplus.

Ee ore ee ore

nulnulcat · 18/03/2007 22:22

or drinking a fruit shoot whilst breast feeding and eating a sausage roll at the same time?

fortyplus · 18/03/2007 22:23

Give him a carrot from me

Blu · 18/03/2007 22:23

Welliemum - but remember that half - more - the stuff we have available packaged nnow just wasn't available to our mothers. And most of what our mothers / grandmothers bought in shops was pretty basic. Now, we have the nano-something-or-other nutrients or what ever they are called ...look at the march of GM stuff....no, the odd farmers market and interest in organic food will not shove th huge multi-nationals out of the market.

WelshBoris · 18/03/2007 22:23

Yes lionheart, it was my birthday present to myself.

Will post a photo of it on my profile tomorrow

fortyplus · 18/03/2007 22:23

nulnulcat - with a loaded syringe in your hand, obviously

nulnulcat · 18/03/2007 22:26

and dont forget the fags!! well you dont get much time to sit down with kids do you so why not take advantage of that 30 mins by having a quick smoke and drink too!

welliemum · 18/03/2007 22:26

Very true, Blu.

What interests me is the possibility - I think it's a high probability - of the food multinationals and Big Pharma essentially combining to become one thing, ie Food as medication.

Then I really will go and buy a cow and plough up my garden for veggies.
