missed the point

hatwoman ~ I'm with you, I think it is a very good learning opportunity love!

shimmy21 · 15/03/2007 22:14

I agree with hatwoman. The point is not that it's only a pound. The point is that we want to teach our children to have a generous spirit, to think about others and to feel that a tiny sacrifice on their own personal part to help someone less fortunte is worth making.

Obviously I have singularly failed to engender this spirit in my own children

wpcanniecartwright · 15/03/2007 22:15

unfortunatley my dc dont have a pound, unless i rapidly give it to them

wpcanniecartwright · 15/03/2007 22:15

good point though

I had the same thought tonight Hatwoman - but didn't have time to have the proper conversation with DS about what it is for and to give him a chance to think about it.

I think if I spring it on him in the morning, chances are he will decide to use his own money, but may then regret it later in the day which would lead to tears at school - so I will just give him the money this time and remember to have the "what is charity" conversation in advance next time (he is 4).

So - if you suggest it in the morning will your DDs have time to think about it, do you think? You could always give them the £1 and say they can add some of their own money if they want to?

pointydog · 15/03/2007 22:19

you pay, unless they really want to.

But I say that as someone who is very erratic about giving dc pocket money so they have very very litle to give

princesscc · 15/03/2007 22:20

I make my dd watch the little v.ts they run during the evening as well, showing where the money is going and then I say things like 'see, you don't know how lucky you are!' and 'perhaps you'll think next time you're cheaky to me, as least you've got a mum!' SWMNBN has got nothing on me!

DD (in recep) informed me at bedtime that tomorrow is 'Red Nose Reindeer Day' so I clearly have some explaining to do

wpcanniecartwright · 15/03/2007 22:23

lol potato

exbury · 15/03/2007 22:33

DS is so excited about his red nose Andrex puppy and RND T-Shirt that I am not sure the point of the exercise has sunk in - but they did say they were going to show them a video at school tomorrow, so it will be interesting to see what I get explained to me tomorrow night

cheltenhamgal · 17/03/2007 02:39

well I paid the £1 for my dd but she also gave her whole weeks pocket money without being asked - {{very proud mum emotion}}

twentypence · 17/03/2007 05:17

Ds took his money box to the shoe shop and tried to pay for his own shoes.

I'm sure he would love to pay his pound himself in this situation, and I'd be happy to let him. I would probably match his pound.
