URGENT - how do I sort a column of dates in Excel?

Zog · 15/03/2007 15:22

They're in the format dd.mm.yy and I need them to go in order from oldest to youngest.

It's for a report that's going out now

TIA

click on the top of the colomn you want to move then click on the A-Z button at the top... HTH

Nip · 15/03/2007 15:23

is that enough info - i typed it a bit quick! LOL

scatterbrain · 15/03/2007 15:24

Highlight the whole sheet then go to the top of the page - select Data and the Sort and tell it which column to sort on and which way (ascending or descending)you want it sorting.

HTH !

Zog · 15/03/2007 15:33

Yes, this is what I've done but it doesn't sort it properly e.g.

01.02.03
02.01.03
04.01.03
01.04.03

would end up as

01.02.03
01.04.03
02.01.03
04.01.03

rather than what I need, which is

02.01.03
04.01.03
01.02.03
01.04.03

Does that make sense?

hhhmmm it works on mine.... Are you clicking the one with the A-z arrow pointing down?

I'll go and check mine out again

Tinker · 15/03/2007 15:37

CAn you change the date format? It's sorting by American dates

Nip · 15/03/2007 15:38

ah yes your right Tinker!

Zog you need to format the colomn to UK dates not us - then sort... this should do it

EllieK · 15/03/2007 15:38

it's because it sorts by the first digit, maybe covert to a different format then sort, swapping back once it's sorted?

Zog · 15/03/2007 15:43

Oh god it's still not doing it! What am I doing wrong? I've formatted the cells to be Date > dd.mm.yy > English (UK) then I'm sorting that column.

when you changed the format did they actually change IYSWIM?

Tinker · 15/03/2007 15:47

Can you change it to 1 Jan 2007 etc?

blondehelen · 15/03/2007 15:47

worked when changed the . to a /

AlienEars · 15/03/2007 15:47

I don't think Excel recognises a . as a separator between dates - it would much rather see a / - could you try replacing the . with / (you can use Edit - Replace and do it that way instead of lots of retyping).

Zog · 15/03/2007 15:50

Ooh let me try that...
