Why say 'I'm loving/liking..' when you could say I love?

I can't stand the use of the present continuous to describe your thoughts.
I know that it's meant to imply something more fleeting and of the moment, but the sound of it makes me cringe.
I think it's part of the modern trend of not daring to be definite about anything. If we say we like or don't like something, we feel we might be judged for having an opinion, or we fear that we'll be accused of being judgemental so we qualify our statement with 'imo' or 'imho.'or use phrases like 'I'm loving ...'

We can all blame McDonalds - the "I'm Loving It" TV ads were when I first became aware of it.

fryalot · 14/03/2007 22:47

I'm thanking you and I'm liking that I'm not pissing you off

deaconblue · 15/03/2007 08:03

this drives me crazy too. Have to rant every time Fearne Cotton and similarly over-enthusiastic presenters use this nonsense phrase. I also hate the use of "genius" about songs etc rather than people.

Tutter · 15/03/2007 08:04

think it's something that will come and go

(note: just managed to resist saying "am thinking..." )

bringmeashrubbery · 15/03/2007 08:23

I'm f*cking hatin' it

  • plus those people who say 'uni' instead of university...
fryalot · 15/03/2007 08:25

my dp is a real university snob: apparently if it's a real university, you call it college. If it's not real (I think he means what used to be a poly but not sure, I tend to switch off) then they all call it uni, thereby giving away the fact that they is all fick and don't go to a real college (university)

If anyone is offended by this, take it up with dp, these are not my views!

CODalmighty · 15/03/2007 08:27

CODalmighty · 15/03/2007 08:28

fryalot · 15/03/2007 08:28

I am guilty of this - I do only do it in informal situations though.

But I never say 'uni'.

bringmeashrubbery · 15/03/2007 08:51

I went to a polythiknic and am proud of it.

fryalot · 15/03/2007 08:53

as I said..... take it up with the wankery ponce

CODalmighty · 15/03/2007 08:58

bringmeashrubbery · 15/03/2007 09:01

pooka · 15/03/2007 09:08

I blame Dermot O'Leary for the "loving" phenonomen. All seemed to start about 2 or 3 years ago with BBLB.
Loathe it.

deaconblue · 15/03/2007 09:16

do you mean loathing it?? While we are being pedantic, anyone else get annoyed when TV credits have people's names with NO CAPITAL LETTERS?!!!!!!!!!!!

mmm over use of exclamation marks also annoying

pooka · 15/03/2007 09:50

Grrr!!!!!!!!!! I'm loathing the use of exclamation marks, but I find I can't help myself most of the time. I'm the worst offender.
